Hermiston girls’ tennis sweeps Capitol, Idaho

HERMISTON – Richole Berger and Alison Hawman raised their season
records to 9-0 as the Hermiston girls’ tennis team beat Capitol, Idaho,

8-0 Thursday.
Coach Curt Berger said Capitol was
without their top four players for an unknown reason, adding, “It’s a
little one-sided when you don’t bring your whole team.”
Jessica Eldrige and Madison Garcia won
in straight sets in the No. 1 doubles match while Ashley Florence and
Trending
Alissa Smith won in the No. 2 match, coming back to win the last two
matches after dropping the first.
The Bulldogs (5-1) get back into league
play next Tuesday against The Dalles-Wahtonka.

CAPITOL 7, HERMISTON 1 –
In Hermiston, the Hermiston boys’ tennis team managed just one victory
Thursday, with Victor Maura defeating Tyler Morris in the No. 3 singles
match 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker win.
“Capitol is by far one of the best teams
we’ve played this year,” coach Casey Arstein said.
He added that it was a good way to
prepare for their three Intermountain Conference matches next week.
The Bulldogs (4-2, 3-0 IMC) will host
The Dalles-Wahtonka on Tuesday.

Boardman, the Riverside girls’ tennis team defended their home court
with a victory Thursday, dropping only the No. 3 doubles match.
Lilly Doherty triumphed in the No. 1
singles match while Evelyn Garcia edged Emily Rietmann 7-3 in the
tie-breaking set to win the No. 2 singles match.
“Evelyn Garcia played her best match of
the season,” coach Dave Pedro said.

Boardman, the Riverside boys’ tennis team swept the Ione Cardinals
Thursday for the win.
The Pirates’ Tim Thomason and Mason
Murphy were nearly perfect, winning their matches 6-1. Thomason then
teamed with No. 1 singles winner Carlos Garcia to win 6-1 in the only
doubles match of the day.
According to coach Dave Pedro, a cold
and windy afternoon made it a tough day for his players.

Baseball
IRRIGON 11, SHERMAN 10 –
In Moro, the Knights (5-6, 0-3 Special District 6) scored a run on a
fielding error in the eighth inning Tuesday to beat Sherman.
James Munkers got on base when the
catcher couldn’t hang onto the third strike and was moved to second on
a sacrifice. Sherman then walked Scott McDaniel, who had been hitting
the ball hard all game according to coach Erich Harjo, and their
shortstop couldn’t handle the grounder from Jesus Munoz, allowing
Munkers to score the winning run.
Brandon Nunn shut the door in the bottom
of the frame.
The Knights get back in to SD6 play
Saturday with a home doubleheader against Pilot Rock.

PENDLETON FRESHMAN 14,
UMATILLA JV 3 – In Umatilla, Jeff Eickstaedt picked up the
win on the mound and helped his own cause, going 6 for 9 at the plate
with a double, two triples and home run. His solo shot came on the very
first pitch of the game.
Daniel Lebsock was 4 for 7 with five
RBIs and Kolby Haliewicz was 5 for 8.
Golf
HEPPNER – At Willow Creek Country Club, Pendleton came with a low round
of 306 to win the Heppner Invite Thursday.
Heppner’s Joe Pranger had the best
individual score with a 70, while Condon’s Drew Messenger shot a 71 and
Pendleton’s Calvin Baty scored a 72, followed by teammate Scott
Newman’s 73.
Pranger’s score came after a 32 on the
back nine – which included a quadruple bogie.
“He really played some great golf,”
coach Greg Grant said. “Joe’s really rounded into form.”
