The Portland Timbers announced that they have renamed their stadium Providence Park. The name change goes along with a 15-year partnership with Providence Health and Services.

The stadium has been called JELD-WEN Field since the Timbers joined Major League Soccer.

The stadium will continue to host games for both of Portland’s professional soccer teams, the Timbers and the Thorns, as well as for collegiate athletic events, and other community-related events.

A new logo for the stadium was unveiled, too.

Merritt Paulson, the president of the Timbers, says the organization has been anticipating this change since last year.

“It frankly was a very natural extension of the deep relationship we already have with Providence,” Paulson says. “And when it became clear to us that maybe the time was right to pass the baton on the naming aspect of this, I really wanted to target a local organization.”

Paulson says the financial terms of the deal are confidential.

Jeld-Wen will still continue its involvement with the Timbers’ community outreach programs.

Providence Health and Services is already a sponsor of the Timbers and the jersey sponsor of the Thorns.
