Records break at UHS meet

UMATILLA – Friday was a good day for track and field at the River’s Edge Invitational, and the myriad of personal records broken is a testament to that.
The Riverside boys edged Umatilla 111-109 for the top team place, and the defending state champion Sherman County girls walked away easily with 118 points and first place.
Robert Turner was the only individual winner from Riverside, and he only tied for first with Ione’s Clay Morter with a 5-8 high jump, but the Pirates as a team placed seven others in the top three spots.
Helix’s Tyler Grindstaff got the PR-breaking started early as he snapped his own best in the 1,500-meter run with a 4:32.9, followed closely by a 4:33.3 by Umatilla’s Terry Johnsen.
“Terry – that’s the reason I ran so fast,” Grindstaff said about his motivation. “The whole race he was ahead and at the very end I passed him.”
It was Johnsen’s second best time in the 1,500-meter, and his best mark since last year’s state meet. The senior finished first in the 3,000-meter with a 9:56.8.
Umatilla’s Peter Stice also broke his own best in the 800-meter, coming up with a 2:04.1.
“Toward the beginning of the season and the last two meets I was running 2:10, 2:11 – not where I wanted to be,” Stice said. “So it’s good to get a time like this.”
Umatilla’s Nancy Cardenas ran her first home track meet of the year after battling a still unknown virus for much of the semester, finishing the 3,000-meter in 14:22.
The virus kept the sophomore out of school and in bed for a month and a half, and she said it feels good to be feeling good again despite being a little out of shape.
“When I first started getting sick my bones and muscles felt like they were going to pop – I couldn’t even walk,” Cardenas explained. “If I wanted to get out of bed or anything my dad had to carry me.”
Umatilla coach Kelley Swarat said having the stellar distance runner on the track again is nice, but having her back in school is even more important.
Echo’s Cierra Eby came close to a hat trick, finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash but second in the 100-meter dash despite limited times between races.
“The time between the (100-meter) to the (400-meter) is good, because the 100’s kind of like a warm up,” the senior explained. “But the 400 really kills me, and I have to focus on recovery time after that.”
