HERMISTON — The joy of reading and the beauty of the outdoors are combined with the new Read & Walk Trail in Hermiston.

Altrusa International of Hermiston invites everyone to attend the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, March 15, 10:30 a.m. at Riverfront Park, 500 SW 23rd St., Hermiston. The Read & Walk Trail is designed to promote literacy while encouraging physical activity — creating a story land adventure for the whole family.

Participants can stroll along the path to read pages from the featured book — in both English and Spanish. According to a press release, after completing the Read & Walk journey, children can compete for prizes at the Hermiston Public Library or The Next Chapter Bookstore.

An international service organization, the name “Altrusa” is derived from combining altruism and USA. In addition to literacy, the club focuses on such things as education, environmental concerns and fundraising to help support projects and programs.
