PENDLETON — The Betty Feves Art Gallery at Blue Mountain Community College presents “Flood,” an exhibition showcasing the works of Charlene Liu, Isami Ching, and Mika Aono.
The opening reception is April 18, 4-6 p.m. in the gallery. The show will be on display through June 5, according to an announcement about the show from BMCC.
Liu, Ching, and Aono are accomplished artists and educators with national and international recognition. All three worked together at the University of Oregon in Eugene, where Liu and Ching teach. Aono, raised in Japan, obtained her master’s of fine arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and worked as the master printer and print studio technician at the U of O before moving to Portugal a few years ago, where she founded her own printmaking studio.
Liu was born in Taiwan and raised in the American Midwest, and was recently named a Hallie Ford Fellow, a prestigious award recognizing outstanding artists. A professor and the printmaking coordinator at the University of Oregon, Liu earned her MFA in visual arts from Columbia University in New York. Her paintings, prints and mixed media installations interweave familial histories, cultural tropes and decorative motifs to explore the fluid nature of memory, heritage and identity. She has shown her work in Pendleton at installations in the Rivoli Theater windows and the Crow’s Shadow gallery, which were part of the Portland 2016 Biennial that hosted satellite exhibitions across the state.
Ching is a senior instructor of art at the U of O and is known for his interdisciplinary approach, integrating printmaking, sculpture and installation art. His work often investigates materiality, transformation and personal and collective histories.
The gallery is open to the public Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and is in Pioneer Hall on the Pendleton Campus, 2411 NW Carden Ave. Admission is free. For more information about the exhibition and the gallery, visit bluecc.edu/feves-art-gallery.
