HEPPNER — The inaugural dinner and auction fundraiser for the Barney Lindsay Memorial Scholarship raised more than $54,000 on Jan. 27 at the Gilliam & Bisbee Event Center in Heppner.

According to a press release from Erin Heideman, the event was an “overwhelming success … showcasing the power of unity in fostering education.” The fund will provide scholarships for students at each of Morrow County’s four high schools — Boardman (Riverside), Heppner, Ione and Irrigon.

Created in memory of the longtime Morrow County farmer, Lindsay also served on the Morrow County School Board of Education. He died unexpectedly Oct. 19, 2022.

The fundraiser, Heideman said, was made possible through the dedicated efforts and meticulous planning of the organizing committee. In addition to Heideman, the committee included Beth Dickenson, Alita Nelson, Ashley Lindsay and Tiah Devin.

Lindsay’s wife, Kimberly Lindsay, expressed gratitude for the donations, sponsorships and efforts everyone provided in organizing the inaugural fundraiser.

“Our family is overwhelmed by the generosity of our community in the support of this endeavor,” she said. “It is something that will help remind my children why giving back to your community is so valuable.”

In addition to honoring the memory of Barney Lindsay, the scholarships will provide support to students pursuing further education beyond high school. Applications are available in the guidance and counseling offices at each of the high schools.

The deadline to apply is May 1. For more information, search Facebook via bit.ly/3SFzqxQ.
