Local roundup: Pendleton’s Neveau a double winner at Wilsonville Invite

WILSONVILLE — Nathan Neveau won two events, and Thaiden Cannin won the 300 hurdles in leading the Pendleton boys to a third-place finish Saturday, April 13, at the Wilsonville Invitational.

Neveau won the shot put with a mark of 50 feet, 1 1/2 inches — almost four feet better than the next man. Teammate Deacon Pace was fourth with a throw of 42-11. Neveau also won the discus with a toss of 152-10.

Cannin ran a season-best 40.18 to win the 300 hurdles. He did not run the 110 hurdles.

Senior Nolan Mead finished third in the high jump with a height of 6-0. He also placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 20-3 3/4.

Jaren Yoshioka threw a PR of 153-9 to place fourth in the javelin, Jaydon Hoffert tied for fourth in the high jump (5-10), and was seventh in the triple jump (38-7 1/2), and William Michael was seventh in the pole vault with a PR of 12 feet.

On the track, The 4×400 relay team of Trey Boston, Logan McCormmach, John Thatcher and Cannin ran a 3:33.65 to take fifth place.

The 4×100 relay team of Carter Cary, Ben Hopkins, Kael Kennedy and Cannin turned in a time 44.29 to place eighth.

Corvallis won the boys’ team title with 83 points, followed by Mountainside (65), Pendleton (64) and North Salem (64).

Tualatin won the girls team title with 105 points, followed by Wilsonville (94.5) and Mountainside (71). Pendleton was 16th with 16 points.

Nessa Neveau had a throw of 114-4 to place fifth in the javelin, while Addison Kennedy finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 34-7 1/2.

On the track, Alison Spratling ran a 1:04.95 to place fifth in the 400, while teammate Citlalli Garcia was seventh with a PR of 1:05.39.

The 4×100 relay team of Shakiya Mulalley, Spratling, Hazel Case and Genevieve Christiansen placed seventh with a time of 52.41, and the 4×400 relay team of Garcia, Nicole Somnis, Melissa tune and Spratling turned in a time of 4:25.20 to place eighth.

PASCO INVITE — Hermiston faced some of the stiffest competition it will see all year at Edgar Brown Stadium in Pasco.

Jaysen Rodriguez led the Bulldogs with a fifth-place finish in the 800 with a personal best time of 1:57.97. He also ran a PR of 4:21.05 in the 1,600, placing 12th.

The top 12 runners in the 1,600 ran a PR, with Landon Heemeyer of Rocky Mountain picking up the win with a time of 4:10.56, three seconds faster than Kamiakin’s Ezra Teeples, who was second.

Hermiston’s 4×400 relay team of Jaime Ramirez Ortega, Rodriguez, Justus Counsell and Landon Shilhanek placed eighth with a time of 3:29.45. They were the top Mid-Columbia Conference team in the race.

Bradley Hottman finished the scoring for the Bulldog, placing eighth in the discus with a season-best throw of 152-2.

Rocky Mountain won the boys team title with 89.5 points, with Kamiakin a distant second with 36. Hermiston was 37th with six points.

Abigayl Dainty scored all three of Hermiston’s points on the girls side, finishing sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.02.

Jackie Garcia ran a season-best 2:27.61 in the 800, placing 14th, and the 4×100 relay team of Madeline Jared, Alondra Risueno, Karina Ortiz and Dainty finished just off the podium in ninth place with a time of 50.39.

Walla Walla won the girls title with 78 points, just edging Rocky Mountain, which had 75. Hermiston was 38th with three.

Prep baseball

STANFIELD/ECHO 18-2, DUFUR 8-1 — The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to eke out a win over the visiting Rangers in the second game of their Special District 7 doubleheader.

Trailing 1-0, Connor Logan hit a single to center field that scored Landon Bailey to tie the score at 1-1.

Two batters later, Logan scored the winning run on a passed ball with no outs.

Logan went 3-for-4 for the Tigers (7-6 overall, 3-0 SD7), while Tanner Jacobson hit a double. Bailey and Blaine McClure combined on a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

In the opener, the Tigers were able to overcome issuing 14 walks for the win.

The Tigers led 7-0 after three innings, but the Rangers stormed back to score seven in the top of the fourth to tie the score.

Not to be outdone, Stanfield/Echo put up eight runs in the bottom of the inning, and added three more in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule.

In the fourth inning, Noah Morton got things rolling with an RBI single, McClure scored on an error, four scored on passed balls, and Logan hit a two-run triple.

Dufur got one run back in the top of the fifth, but the shifty Tigers scored three in the fifth, with two scoring on passed balls, and Kobe Harwood hitting an RBI single.

Bailey had three hits and scored three runs for the Tigers, while Logan and Wyatt Harris each drove in two runs.

GRANT UNION 10-17, WESTON-MCEWEN 1-3 — The TigerScots dropped to 0-6 in Special District 7 play with a pair of home losses to the Prospectors.

In the opener, Grant Union’s Talon VanCleave pitched a complete game, allowing one run on six hits while striking out 12.

The Prospectors held a 1-0 lead through four innings, then scored four runs in the fifth and five in the seventh.

W-M scored its one run in the sixth as Tim Taylor hit a double to center field, sending Easton Berry across the plate.

Dylan Newbold and Taylor each had two hits for W-M. Sean Roggiero took the loss for the TigerScots, allowing eight rights on 11 hits. He stuck out 11 and walked just one.

In the second game, the Prospectors jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the fifth. W-M scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it wouldn’t be near enough.

Berry had two hits and an RBI for the TigerScots, while Clark Hodgson and Cason Pettyjohn each drove in one run.

Baryn Huerta hit a three-run title for GU in the fourth inning, and had two stolen bases.

UMATILLA 5-6, NYSSA 4-7 — Davis Raymond pitched six innings of four-hit ball, striking out 11, to help the Vikings to an Eastern Oregon League road win over the Bulldogs in the first game of their doubleheader.

Umatilla (3-7 overall, 1-3 EOL) scored two runs in the top of the first inning, and Nyssa came back to tie the score with runs in the third and fifth innings.

The Vikings scored three runs in the top of the six, with one coming across on an error, and RJ Estrada driving in two with a single to left field for a 5-2 lead.

Nyssa scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Kevin Dorathy struck out looking to end the game.

In the second game, Nyssa (2-9, 1-1) scored early, then held on for the win to break a six-game losing streak.

Jace Bateman went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Bulldogs, while Ramon Iniguez had two hits.

Justus Zamudio drove in two runs for the Vikings, while Alex Valdez III went 2-for-2 with one run scored.

Prep softball

UMATILLA 6-8, NYSSA 7-6 — Mayeli Cardenas drove in two runs in the top of the fifth inning to help the Vikings to a road win over the Bulldogs in the second game of their Eastern Oregon League doubleheader.

The Vikings (4-6 overall, 2-1 EOL) trailed 6-3 heading into the fifth inning. Jaily Rodriguez-Gonzalez hit an RBI single, followed by Maddisyn Rico, who hit a two-run single to knot the score at 6-6.

After two consecutive outs, Cardenas drove a hard-hit ball to left field to push Rodriguez-Gonzalez and Rico across the plate. Neither team would score over the last two innings.

Cardenas and Kaylonni Schaefer each had three hits for Umatilla.

In the first game, the game was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh when Nysa’s Kami Thompson drew a bases-loaded walk to win the game.

Rodriguez-Gonzalez went 2-for-4 for the Vikings, while Esperanza Rodriguez-Ruiz drove in two runs. Meghan Owens pitched a completed game, allowing seven runs on four hits while striking out five and walking six.

Addie Cleaver pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs (6-5, 1-1), scattering six hits and striking out 12.

ELGIN/IMBLER 12-4, PILOT ROCK 7-14 — The Rockets split their Special District 7 doubleheader with the visiting Huskies to improve to 2-4 in league play.

No other details were available.

Girls tennis

NYSSA 4, MCLOUGHLIN 2 — Jocelyn Arroyo won the No. 1 singles match for the Pioneers, beating Brenna Kesler 6-2, 6-3, but it was tough going for Mac-Hi from there.

“The girls team played well, just falling short in some of their matches,” Mac-Hi coach Danny Sanchez said. “Jocelyne had a great win, keeping her composure when her opponent tried making adjustments in her match. Jocelyne had an answer for every attempt to change up the match.”

Also posting a win for the Pioneers was the No. 2 doubles team of Ava Arredondo and Bella Quist-Knopf, who beat Olivia Rushton and Emily Cornell 7-5, 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Nyssa’s London Hartley beat Norma Rodriguez 6-2, 6-0, and at No. 3, Jade Hammond topped Luz Maria Reyes 8-5.

Boys tennis

NYSSA 4, MCLOUGHLIN 0 — The visiting Bulldogs dominated the match from start to finish in the singles, but Nyssa had to earn its win in the lone singles match.

Ian Esplin and Sam Dorathy needed three sets to beat Mac-Hi’s Diego Ledesma and Bryan Martinez 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

“It was a tough loss for the boys, but it was a great battle between the boys doubles teams, splitting sets and playing a third set,” Mc-Hi coach Danny Sanchez said. “The match could have gone either way.”

In singles, Dawson Richards won the No. 1 match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bryan Garcia, while at No. 2, Garrison Page beat Connor Batchelor 6-4, 6-2. Layne Fleharty closed out the singles with an 8-0 win over Zach Lamb.

College baseball

BLUE MOUNTAIN 8-6, YAKIMA VALLEY 4-5 — The Timberwolves ran their win streak to eight games, and sit atop the NWAC East standing with a 9-3 record after sweeping the Yaks on the road.

BMCC broke open a close game in the fifth inning with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single by Davis Mauzy, who finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Kaden Boyle went 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI, while Richie Hagen and Logan Williams each had two hits.

In the second game, the Timberwolves scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a 5-1 deficit for the win.

Evan Gant led the charge in the eighth with a three-run home run. Williams went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

College softball

WENATCHEE VALLEY 6-8, BLUE MOUNTAIN 4-7 — The Knights swept the visiting Timberwolves to improve to 12-4 in the NWAC East.

In the opener, BMCC (3-11 East) led 3-1 after four innings, but the Knights scored five in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Kayla Bowling went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Timberwolves, while Avyree Miethe hit a double, and Gracie Hamilton drove in two runs.

For WV, Jazlynn Torres hit two doubles, and Kaya Enriquez had three hits and drove in three runs.

In the second game, the Knights took an early lead, then had to stave off the Timberwolves to eke out the win.

Heading into the seventh inning, BMCC trailed 5-3, but scored three runs, two coming off a single by Miethe, for a 6-5 advantage.

WV tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, and scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Miethe and Kylie Kemp each drove in two runs for BMCC, while Brooklyn Horrocks hit a double.
