Ashtyn Larsen receives Lindberg scholarship

PENDLETON — Ashtyn Larsen, a graduating senior from Pendleton High School, is the recipient of the 2024 David Jon Lindberg Memorial Scholarship.

According to a press release, Larsen is the daughter of Jaime Larsen and the late Jim Larsen, of Pendleton. She is involved in numerous community and school activities, including girls soccer and is secretary of the senior class.

Larsen will use the $2,500 award at Brigham Young University, where she plans to major in chemical engineering.

This is the 45th anniversary of the scholarship, which honors the memory of David Jon Lindberg. The scholarship fund is managed by the Pendleton Foundation Trust and is awarded each year to an outstanding PHS graduate whose career embodies the standards Lindberg set: commitment to citizenship, scholarship and family.

2 Hermiston seniors receive Ford Family Foundation scholarships

HERMISTON — The Hermiston School District announced May 21 that Evelin Contreras Cardenas and Guadalupe Esparza, both seniors at Hermiston High School, were named Ford Scholars.

According to a press release, this prestigious scholarship program, offered by The Ford Family Foundation, meets 90% of a student’s financial need, up to $40,000 per year, for four years of college. Both students plan to attend the University of Oregon this fall.

“Evelin and Guadalupe’s achievements are a testament to their hard work and the supportive environment at Hermiston High School,” Superintendent Tricia Mooney said. “We are incredibly proud of all our Ford Scholars and look forward to their continued success.”

Rotary Club of Pendleton awards Don Fossatti Scholarships

PENDLETON — The Rotary Club of Pendleton announced it selected five recipients to receive Don Fossatti Scholarships, each for $2,000.

The winners include four Pendleton High School students, Anika Urbina, Grace Pitner, Ashtyn Larsen and Julianne E. Jones; and Kiera Furrow Denny, of Weston-McEwen High School.

According to a press release, determining factors in choosing the recipients included academic qualifications, a demonstrated ability to achieve success in their chosen field of study, financial need, and a reflection of the Rotary motto of service before self in the students’ lives.

A longtime educator, Don Fossatti served as the chairman of the Rotary’s scholarship fund for many years. After his death in 2011, the award was renamed in his honor.

Athena student receives SELCO scholarship

SPRINGFIELD — SELCO Community Credit Union announced May 13 that 21 students from across the state are the recipients of its 2024 scholarship program, including Keira Denny, who will receive $3,500. After graduating from Weston-McEwen High School, Denny plans to attend the University of Idaho.

According to a press release, applicants or an immediate family member must belong to the credit union to be eligible for a scholarship. In addition, students must earn a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or have received a General Educational Development diploma, and plan to attend a vocational school, college or university. SELCO received a record number of applications for 2024. In total, it awarded $77,500 in scholarships.

Local student graduates from Utah Tech University

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The 113th graduating class from Utah Tech University featured 2,967 students, including Savannah Sharp, of Hermiston. A 2020 graduate of Stanfield Secondary School, Sharp received academic recognition several times during her career at Utah Tech.
