BOARDMAN — For the second year in a row, the Riverside girls soccer team has produced the Eastern Oregon League player of the year.
Senior defender Crystal Sanchez followed in Aleydis Torres’ cleats this season. Sanchez also was named to the 3A/2A/1A all-state first team.
Sanchez was the heart and soul of the Pirates’ defense that allowed just 18 goals in 16 games, including seven shutouts. She also scored four goals and had one save when the goalie was out of the box.
“She is just a natural,” Riverside coach Yvonne Torres said. “She is naturally fast and athletic. She just gets the hang of anything you teach her. Julie (Magaña) is the same way. They enjoy playing. Crystal will be missed. I won’t get another like her soon. She was vocal and led her defenders.”
Also earning first-team EOL honor for the Pirates were senior forward Julie Magaña, senior midfielder Monse Pacheco and junior defender Justein Tido.
Magaña, who also earned second team all-state honors, finished the season with 14 goals and six assists.
Pacheco (6 goals, 10 assists) and Tido (6 goals) were selected to the all-state honorable mention team.
“I knew about Julie and Crystal being nominated for all-state, but having the other two, Monse and Justein, was a surprise for me,” Torres said. “It was a good surprise.”
Riverside finished its season 10-4-2 overall. The Pirates lost in the first round of the state playoffs 1-0 in a shootout to Salem Academy.
“We only lose three girls, but they are a big part of the team,” Torres said.
McLoughin had two players named to the EOL first team — senior midfielder Madi Perkins and junior forward Rylee Herndon.
Herndon led the Pioneers with 29 goals and 13 assists. She also was named to the all-state second team.
Perkins, who had 19 goals and 21 assists this season, also earned all-state honorable mention honors.
Mac-Hi (9-5-2) advanced to the 3A/2A/1A state playoffs, where it lost a 3-1 game to Brookings-Harbor in the first round.
