UMATILLA — Umatilla High School junior Maddisyn Rico had a nice finish to her season, earning first-team Eastern Oregon League honors as an infielder.
That was sweetened with an honorable mention nod on the 3A all-state team by the state coaches.
“It’s the first all-state honor we have had in our seven years,” Vikings coach Erick Olson said. “It’s been over a decade and half since anyone had a chance. She was shocked and thrilled. I was too. I was beyond excited.”
Rico, who has been the starting shortstop for the Vikings since her freshman year, hit .411 with two doubles, one triple and one home run. She also had 14 RBIs, scored 20 runs and had 14 stolen bases.
“She spent a lot of time working on her own in the offseason,” Olson said. “She’s hitting all the time at her place. It was nice for it to pay off, and it was nice to get feedback at the all-league meeting about her. Everyone knew who she was. She hit well with teams trying to pitch around her. She played good defense at a position that gets attention. We ask a lot of Maddisyn. It’s nice for the rest of the state to give the recognition we know is true about her.”
Burns collected all of the major awards, with Merissa Medley named player of the year, Ayla Davies pitcher of the year, and Robert Medley coach of the year.
Umatilla had pitcher Piper Dilley, infielder Jaily Rodriguez and outfielder Meeka Holmes earn second-team EOL honors.
McLoughlin infielder Addy Leonetti was named to the second team, as was Riverside outfielder Halie Orcutt.
