Oregon may get new COVID boosters next week

Oregon has already pre-ordered more than 75,000 doses of a new coronavirus booster designed to target the particularly contagious COVID-19 variants in anticipation of a surge in cases this fall.

Federal health officials authorized the new booster Wednesday. Each dose contains the original vaccine formula as well as one modified to target the omicron variants considered to be most contagious. Under standard procedure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must now make recommendations on who should get the booster.

For those in Oregon, yet another group must give the go-ahead: the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, which reviews the science and the federal agencies’ conclusions and recommendations. The group is scheduled to meet Sept. 2, an Oregon Health Authority spokesperson said in an email. The governor gives the final stamp of approval before shots can go into arms.

It is effectively a foregone conclusion the vaccine will be approved in Oregon. Spokesperson Rudy Owens said doses could start arriving in Oregon as early as later this week, though it’s more likely it will be after Labor Day. The state pre-ordered 23,800 doses for its first wave of deliveries and 51,700 for the second wave.
