Hollins, along with former NBA coach Vinny Del Negro and former Oklahoma City and Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks, is being considered for Portland's lead assistant role.

PORTLAND — When Chauncey Billups was introduced as the new head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, he made it clear having experienced minds on his coaching staff would be critical. The first rumors of his staff additions align with that.

The Trail Blazers are considering Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Lionel Hollins, former NBA coach Vinny Del Negro, and former Oklahoma City and Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks for the lead assistant role under Billups, according to a report from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Hollins, who was selected by the Blazers with the No. 6 pick in the 1975 NBA draft, would bring a sizeable amount of experience to the Blazers coaching staff. He was part of Frank Vogel’s staff that brought a championship to the Lakers last season, and previously had stints as a head coach in Memphis and Brooklyn.

Del Negro hasn’t coached in the NBA since the 2012-13 season when he coached the Los Angeles Clippers. His time with the Clippers coincided with Neil Olshey’s tenure as general manager of the team from 2010 to 2012. Del Negro also coached Billups as a player in two of his three seasons in Los Angeles.

Brooks was fired by the Wizards after five seasons following a first-round postseason exit this year. He’s most known for his tenure with the Thunder, where he coached the team for seven seasons, making the NBA Finals in 2011-12.

Billups was formally introduced as the Blazers new head coach on June 29, where he officially took over for Terry Stotts.
