- Scott Waggoner’s 1969 Chevy Camaro Z28, which won Best in Show during the 2018 Cruisin’ for Scholarships Car Show, is featured on the trophy for this year’s show. The event is Saturday at Blue Mountain Community College, Pendleton.
The Cruisin’ for Scholarships Car Show is revving up for its seventh year. The fundraiser helps support Blue Mountain Community College’s Diesel Technology Program.
The event is Saturday, May 11 beginning with on-site registration at 8:30 a.m. on the central lawn at BMCC, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton. The $20 fee includes a dash plaque. Also, the first 50 to enter receive a goodie bag. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The show will celebrate and pay tribute to its history with three memorial trophies being presented.
The Best in Show will be awarded in honor of Scott Waggoner, who died last spring after battling cancer. A BMCC diesel tech instructor, his black 1969 Chevy Camaro Z28 will be featured on the trophy.
The People’s Choice Award will be given in tribute to the late Lee Eavenson, who ran BMCC’s Auto Body and Paint Program for 15 years. His legacy of custom cars, custom paint and partnering with the community is strong at the car show, with many vehicles worked on or inspired by Eavenson.
The President’s Choice will be awarded by new BMCC president Dennis Bailey-Fougnier in honor of the late Lee Dicus, who graduated from the BMCC Diesel Tech Program in the early 1970s. The award is sponsored by Dicus’ sister, Lynn Stephens. She has sponsored an award in her brother’s honor for several years, and started a scholarship endowment in his name.
“Honoring these people who built the program early on is important for our students today,” said Jeremy Pike, BMCC’s current diesel technology head instructor. “There’s a history there that has made the program successful.”
There is no charge for the public to attend the car show. However, people are encouraged to bring some cash. BMCC’s Tim Wilson will be making homemade donuts all morning. They are $1 each or $10 for a dozen. In addition, the Pendleton Lions Club will offer burgers, sides and drinks.
Also, local businesses and supporters have provided a variety of prizes at the raffle booth. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The event also features lawn games and a dunk tank. All proceeds from food sales, the raffle and dunk tank will support BMCC student scholarships.
Coordinated by the BMCC Foundation, the car show raises money for BMCC’s Diesel Technology scholarship fund, and provides student assistance with tools, books, tuition and living expenses.
