Pendleton and CTUIR announce open burn dates

With rain last week and more precipitation forecasted, Pendleton and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation will lift their burn bans by the end of the week.

Pendleton interim Fire Chief Shawn Penninger said in a previous interview that the city usually lifts its burn ban on Oct. 1, but an especially dry summer spurred him to postpone the end date until the area got some rain.

Rain came last week — 0.01 inches on Tuesday, 0.19 inches on Friday, and 0.39 on Saturday — and the National Weather Service is anticipating more precipitation on Tuesday.

The turn in weather led the Pendleton Fire Department lift the burn ban on Thursday in Pendleton, the Rieth Water District, and the Lower McKay, McKay Dam and Riverside districts.

In a CTUIR press release, Umatilla Tribal Fire Chief Rob Burnside also cited the cooler weather for lifting the Umatilla Indian Reservation’s burn ban on Saturday.

Permits are required for burning stumps, field burns, burning trash, commercial waste, demolition waste, construction debris and bonfires in Pendleton. Permits are provided for free by the Pendleton Fire Department.

Burn barrels aren’t allowed inside Pendleton city limits, but are acceptable in the water and fire districts outside the city. Burn barrels are only allowed on “green days,” which can be verified by calling the Umatilla County burn line at 541-278-6397.

The city’s burn line is 541-966-0327.

On the Umatilla Indian Reservation, permits can be acquired from the CTUIR Tribal Department of Natural Resources’ Office of Air Quality or the tribal fire station.

Questions and concerns about burns can be directed to the CTUIR Office of Air Quality at 541-429-7421.
