Tigers win home opener

STANFIELD — The Stanfield Tigers girls basketball team had a big reason to smile on Saturday as the team earned its first win of the season 35-21 over Ione in their home opener.

“It’s really nice to finally get the first win,” Stanfield coach Daniel Sharp said. “The girls did a good job of getting to the line and they hit some good shots, and it helped out a lot.”

Kendra Hart led Stanfield (1-6) with 10 points, and Brittin Braithwaite chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds. For Ione (0-4) Maggie Flynn led with six points and Morgan Orem had four.

Up next for Stanfield is a home game with Western Mennonite on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Ione (0-4) will next travel to Umatilla on Monday for a 6 p.m. tip.

ENTERPRISE 51, MAC-HI 28 — At Pilot Rock, the Enterprise Outlaws were too much for the Mac-Hi Pioneers as Enterprise earned the 51-28 victory at the Pilot Rock Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

“We are still working on meshing and coming together as a team,” Mac-Hi coach Brooke Garton said. “We have a lot of players on the younger end and we’re working on getting better as a team to get ready for league.”

Sydney Richwine continued her strong season for Mac-Hi (1-6) with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Mac-Hi next travels to Weston-McEwen for a 5 p.m. start on Monday.

IMBLER 46, WESTON-MCEWEN 36 — At Imbler, the Weston-McEwen TigerScots lost just their second game of the season on Saturday night as they fell 46-36 on the road against Imbler.

“We just didn’t take advantage of opportunities in the fourth quarter,” Weston-McEwen coach Eric Jensen said.

Ashley Hill hit three 3-pointers for Weston-McEwen (4-2) and led the team with 11 points overall, while Chelsea Quaempts had eight points and four steals.

Weston-McEwen next hosts Mac-Hi on Monday night with a 5 p.m. start time.

Boys Basketball

STANFIELD 97, IONE 46 — At Stanfield, the Tigers got to play in front of its home fans for the first time on Saturday night and put on a show, defeating the Ione Cardinals 97-46 in the home opener.

“It was an exciting game from the start,” Stanfield coach Jason Sperr said. “We got out to a 30-0 lead and pulled off the press pretty early, but the guys still kept playing hard.”

All 14 players on the varsity team got significant playing time in the game, and five players finished in double figure scoring led by Tony Flores with 15 and Dylan Grogan with 13. For Ione (1-4), Wyatt McNary had a huge game in the post as he scored a game-high 25 points, while Austin Carter added 11.

Ione (1-4) next travels to Umatilla on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. start, and Stanfield (6-1) will host Western Mennonite for a 7 p.m. start.

NIXYAAWII 69, COVE 50 — At Mission, the Nixyaawii Golden Eagles kicked off its Old Oregon League slate with a solid 69-50 win over Cove on Saturday night.

“We’re not quite sure on how we’ll sit in the league (standings) and to get a solid win at home is nice,” Nixyaawii coach Shane Rivera said.

Mick Schimmell led Nixyaawii (2-2) with a game-high 28 points, and Devan Barkely followed with 14 points. Chandler Case also contributed seven points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Nixyaawii next heads to Lewiston, Idaho on Tuesday to take on Owyhee (NV) in the Lapwai Invitational at Lapwai High School. Tip-off is set for Noon.

HEPPNER 56, GRANT UNION 42 — At John Day, the Heppner Mustangs earned a solid non-league win on Saturday night by traveling south to beat the Grant Union Prospectors 56-42.

“We won on the defensive end of the floor again,” Heppner coach Jeremy Rosenbalm said. “Grant Union is always a tough place to play, and I’m pleased with how the boys responded after a long trip in the snow and how the defensive effort and intensity was there.

“That’s really where the difference came from in the game.”

Heppner (4-1) next hosts Echo on Monday night for a 6 p.m. tip-off.

MAC-HI 46, ENTERPRISE 32 — At Pilot Rock, the Mac-Hi Pioneers got back to .500 on the season with a solid win over Enterprise at the Pilot Rock Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

“We played really good defense and rebounded well,” Mac-Hi coach Jordon Poyner said, “We really played great all-around basketball. We’re starting to come together and if we can execute on offense and play good defense we can be even more competitive.”

Alex Delgado hit four 3-pointers in the game for Mac-Hi (3-3) and finished with 12 points, and Michael Armenta also finished with 12 for the Pioneers.

Mac-Hi next plays at Weston-McEwen on Monday with a 7 p.m. start.

HELIX 61, WALLOWA 42 — At Helix, the Grizzlies opened up Old Oregon League play with its first win of the season and its league home win in four years by taking it 61-42 over Wallowa on Saturday.

Grant Christman and Justin Williams paced Helix’s offense with 18 points each in the game, while Gavin Newtson had a season-high 10 points off the bench. Jon Shaw led the team with 11 rebounds and three blocks as well.

Helix next travels to Echo on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
