The forest fire which has been raging near Gibbon for the past forty-eight hours will be under control today, according to a telegram received by Dan P. Smythe this morning from Frank Earnhart, who left with thirty men at 1 oclock this morning to reinforce the crew of fighters which had been combatting the flames for many hours. The location of the fire is on the Umatilla reservation about a mile above Gibbon and along the Umatilla river. The timber is not large but very dense along the slopes making the progress of the flames difficult to check. No estimate has been placed on the amount of damage done but it will undoubtedly be considerable.

Robert M. Crow, chairman of the Citizens League seeking to unseat three councilmen and the mayor of Stanfield on malfeasance of office charges, has resigned from his post as city and rural district fire chief. The move came as a result of last Saturdays special meeting of the firemen in which they voted 10-3 to ask Crow to resign. Donald F. Brandt, vice president of the volunteer fire department, pointed out in a letter to Crow that in the best interest of the fire department, close harmony with the city council is needed. After the events of the past weeks, many of the firemen felt that this was no longer possible.

Two Hermiston men died when a light plane they were taking on a fishing trip crashed southeast of John Day sometime Saturday, the Oregon Civil Air Patrol said today. Pilot Jerry Johnson, who was flying his own plane, and Curtis Seifert left Saturday for a two-day trip to McDermitt, which is on the Oregon-Nevada border on Highway 95. Seifert was a lineman for Umatilla Electric Cooperative. Johnson, a doctor of veterinary medicine, operated Country Animal Hospital on Butter Creek Highway.
