HERMISTON? Janice K. Jan Nichols, 57, of Hermiston died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland because of complications from ovarian cancer. A memorial service will be held at the Hermiston High School gymnasium Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at 10 a.m.
Ms. Nichols was born Nov. 9, 1953, in Port Angeles, Wash., to Wayne and Ida Nichols. She graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1972 and graduated from Western Washington University, in Bellingham, Wash., in 1983 with a degree in English. She worked at the Bellingham library during and after graduation. She moved to Hermiston in 1985 to begin her teaching career, where she taught in the Hermiston school district at the elementary, middle and high school levels as both a teacher and a librarian for 26 years.
Ms. Nichols is survived by brother Randy Nichols of Seattle; a nephew; a niece; several aunts and cousins; and numerous friends, students and colleagues.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hermiston Education Foundation (P.O. Box 1096, Hermiston, OR 97838) or the Hermiston Public Library (235 E Gladys Avenue, Hermiston, OR 97838).
