HERMISTON — Preston Pederson, Trent Sorey and Calgary Smith added state titles to their seasons on Sunday after the final round at the Oregon High School Rodeo Association Finals Rodeo at Crook County Fairgrounds in Prineville.

The cowboys were three of six Intermountain Rodeo team members to qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in 12 events.

Pederson, a recent Hermiston High graduate, was the boys’ Reserve All-Around Champion (and the top all-around cowboy in Oregon when the title went to Brush Prairie, Washington’s Zachary Raley), and was also named Tesky’s Top Hand after he finished the season in the top 10 of four events.

Pederson won titles in tie-down roping and boys’ cutting. He was fifth in steer wrestling and ninth in team roping.

Sorey and Smith, the freshman-junior team ropers from Pendleton, missed the short-go at the state finals despite catching their second steer in 6.83 seconds. They had enough of a lead in the season points that it didn’t matter though.

They held off Intermountain teammate Phoenix Everano and his heading partner Will Gallagher for the championship, and Smith also qualified for the NHSFR in tie-down where he placed second. Sorey was tied for seventh in the event.

Everano won Boys Rookie of the Year and also placed sixth in tie-down.

Kolby Currin of Heppner also qualified for nationals by finishing second in steer wrestling, third and boys cutting and second in rifle shooting.

His younger sister Jacee, will join him there after placing third in breakaway and goat tying, and placing fourth in pole bending to earn her Girls Rookie of the Year honors.

Also with top-10 season finishes was Heppner’s Jaiden Mahoney with fifth in pole bendings and sixth in barrel racing.

Ivy Sandford of Ione won the queen competition as well.

Haines’ Samantha Kerns was the All-Around Cowgirl.

The top four placers in each event qualify for the NHSFR which will be held July 17-23 in Gillette, Wyoming. Contestants that finished in 5th-15th places qualify for Silver State in Winnemucca, Nevada on June 27-July 3.
