A Pendleton man died Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash near the Bar M Ranch east of Weston.
Sheriff Terry Rowan in a written statement said Steven Cain, 37, was driving a 2005 Jeep Wrangler southeast on Bingham Road when the Jeep lost control at about 9:40 a.m. on icy roads near the ranch. The Jeep ran off the road, rolled down an embankment about 50 feet and slammed into a tree.

Cain was wearing a seatbelt and was found inside the vehicle. He was unconscious when his friends reached him, according to Rowan.
“The roof of the Jeep was destroyed, and the vehicle was trapped by trees,” the sheriff’s statement said. “Cain’s friends winched the Jeep away from the trees and freed Cain, and then transported him about 15 miles where they met with an ambulance crew from Umatilla Tribal Fire and Ambulance.”
Cain suffered several head injuries and never regained consciousness, Rowan reported, and died at about 10:30 a.m.
