PENDLETON Hit with his fourth foul at the onset of the fourth quarter, Stanfield guard Hunter Braithwaite wanted to play conservatively.
Defensively, anyway.
On the other end of the floor, however, the junior was assertive, scoring 10 of his game-high 19 points in the period to help the Tigers down Nixyaawii 62-55 Friday night at the Pendleton Convention Center.
The teeter-totter contest, part of the BouncN Cancer charity event, saw Stanfield break away from the Eagles when Braithwaite found his touch.
Locked at 46-46 to start the fourth, Braithwaite hit a pair of 3-pointers and attacked the rim, sparking a 12-5 run that ultimately decided the non-league meeting.
We just switched up our offense, Braithwaite said. We were using the high-post, but then we went to four-out and were able to get some good looks.
Stanfield coach Daniel Sharp praised the 6-foot-2 gunner for rising to the occasion.
We were able to get some penetration, and (Braithwaite) hit some shots, Sharp said. Its a good thing, because he was the only one (making shots).
In a game that featured eight lead changes and a combined 44 fouls, the Tigers (4-0) took advantage of the Eagles miscues down the stretch.
Nixyaawii (3-2), which never led in the fourth quarter, was able to cut Stanfields lead to 58-55 with 37 seconds left, but the Eagles Hunter Melton tried to foul Felipe Rodriguez in an effort to send him to the line and regain possession.
Instead, Melton was hit with an intentional foul, where Rodriguez knocked down both free throws to extend to lead while giving the Tigers the ball again.
Stanfield and Nixyaawii, two teams that like to push the tempo, saw a bit of half-court play in the second half when the Eagles went inside to their standout post, Elijah Bevis.
Bevis used his sizable frame and soft hands inside to score 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half.
He believed turnovers were the difference.
I thought it was a bad day for us, Bevis said. We had 26 turnovers. We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball.
In the first half, Nixyaawii was paced by the play of Melton. The fleet-footed guard was typically pushing the tempo, and scored 13 of his 17 points before intermission.
His 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer sparked an 8-0 run, their biggest of the game.
Honestly, we thought we would just come in here and pick up a win, Braithwaite said. We havent had anyone thats been able to run with us, but they were able to do that.
The Eagles, who saw Osias Edmiston score 10 points, took Stanfield out of its structure.
It was hard to get into a rhythm offensively, Sharp said.
Notably, all 10 players on Stanfields roster reached the scoring column. Ryan Bailey and Bryce Linker had eight points apiece.
Nixyaawii and Stanfield continue play at the Convention Center Saturday. The Eagles take on Pilot Rock at 7:30 p.m. and the Tigers take on Echo at 4:30 p.m.
