Maybe the Blazers could use Calvin

“Like Mike” is a pretty cute movie, that 9-year-old Tony liked “everything” best about.

The movie stars Lil Bow Wow as Calvin Cambridge, a 14-year-old orphan, and his two buddies played by Jonathan Lipnicki and Brenda Song. All three want to be adopted but know little kids have the best chance of getting homes.

Calvin has another wish, to be a great basketball player, “like Mike” (Michael Jordan.)

Among the goodies the Salvation Army nun, Sister Theresa, brings to the Chesterfield Group Home is a pair of old Nikes with the initials “M.J.” on them. Calvin grabs them.

Orphanage bullies take them away from him and throw them over some power lines. During the night and in the middle of a huge rain storm Calvin and his two friends sneak out to get the shoes.

Although the shoes are struck by lightning, Calvin gets them. From that time on when he’s wearing those shoes, Calvin can make jump shots, 3-pointers, slam dunks, everything.

The Los Angeles Knights take Calvin on to boost attendance, and find themselves heading for the playoffs with Calvin’s assistance.

NBA basketball stars Allen Iverson, Gary Payton, Vince Carter and Chris Webber make appearances.

It’s a great movie for older kids, too. But, watch out for Calvin’s evil guardian, Stan Bittlemean, played by Crispin Glover.
