‘Blue Crush’ washes up dead on the beach

Sometimes while watching a movie, it becomes glaringly obvious to me how little thought was actually put into it. The result, as in this case, can create something virtually unbearable to watch.
“Blue Crush” falls under the last category.
It is a big dumb summer movie that has virtually nothing to offer the viewer besides a couple hot chicks (who aren’t even good actresses) and a lot of pretty shots of a lot of pretty waves.
It’s basically a film about girls who work at cleaning a big Oahu hotel, but their hearts are in their bikinis, and their bikinis are usually in the massive surf beckoning just offshore.
Kate Bosworth plays Anne Marie, a hip professional surfer who, after nearly drowning in an undisclosed accident, returns to train for a big pro-surfing contest. It’s time for the predictable snag.
She meets a football player who wants to learn to surf. Soon she’s madly in love. Her friends feel betrayed and try to convince her to return in time to surf in the big competition.
Have you predicted the ending yet? If not, maybe you’d actually enjoy this testament to laughable summer flops. Gorgeous shots of waves, surfers and beautiful beaches coupled with shots of girls are inserted between scenes to help keep you entertained. But that’s really all there is.
The dialogue is pathetic at best, and the entire film seems like it was run through six or seven focus groups trying to figure out just how to make the monotony a little more appetizing.
I guess if you enjoy bikini-clad do-gooders followed by shot after endless shot of big waves, this movie will entice and entertain you. However, if you’re looking for substance of any kind, stay far away. This one is beached and going nowhere.
