‘New’ wickers, bright metals have high-style appeal

Warm weather is here, and for many their living rooms are out-of-doors.

The porch, the patio, poolside, the lawn and garden “rooms” are places for stylish at-home relaxation and entertaining.

Manufacturers of indoor-outdoor furniture have come up with a variety of elegant furnishings for those outdoor rooms. New technology makes it possible for natural fibers, such as wicker, to assume more interesting shapes and textures and to be more flexible in function.

Willow wicker was a favorite of the Victorians. Nostalgia buffs will be happy to know modern wicker, often made of different materials, looks the same. Given maximum weather resistance (rain doesn’t phase it), the new wickers are treated for the extremes of salt spray, sunlight, weight and stress as well. The brightly colored cushions used on the seating pieces are often of 100 – percent acrylic and guaranteed to resist summer sun and showers.

Lloyd Flanders all-weather wicker collection includes lounge chairs, rockers and gliders in the same classic look of a day past. There are porch swings, a steamer chair with a pull-out ottoman, the classic footstool-style ottoman for comfortable high-backed chairs, planters and end tables, etc. The collection called “Front Porch” echoes the look of the wicker on the Southern verandah during the turn of the century. While the furniture is designed for its weather-wear characteristics, the look is so charming many will want to bring it indoors placing it in the sun room or use as occasional seating in the bedrooms, breakfast room, hallways or the basement playroom when cold weather hits again.

The new wicker material is made from craft paper woven on a loom and guaranteed not to crack, peel or have burrs. The woven-wicker “fabric” is then stretched around the frame. A durable baked-in, polyester finish adds weather protection to the already moisture resistant non-porous wicker.

The Paleck company of Richmond, Calif., is another company that has taken a new route to wicker. In their version, paper is twisted around long strips of metal to create the look of a natural wicker but given its finer weave, it allows for a more curvaceous form, such as an occasional table that has the look of draped fabric. The company’s “wicker” is especially appealing in the natural color of the paper.

There is a sweater-weave chair in the collection that complements the company’s pieces done in sea grass and other natural fibers, such as rattan and conventional wicker. Bar stools given a cable-knit weave are especially handsome.

Paleck does a white-washed basketry finish and a variety of contemporary hues as well. This line is for the screened-in porch, not for an outdoor setting. So is the Bauer International collection that makes an especially handsome cricket club chair woven in a heavily texture manner that stays undercover.

For a sophisticated indoor/outdoor look, metals, wrought iron or aluminum may be just the ticket.

The Pompeii collection is perfectly executed in designs for dining, sitting and entertaining. Neither sun nor rain can dampen its spirit, and the tables include places for the colorful umbrellas that protect from sun and rain. There are also wonderful chairs with cut-out designs in the metal.

Three Coins Imports has a handsome basket-weave design that give wrought iron chairs, bar stools, patio and dining tables a romantic look. There are also settees and a classic bench that rings a tree from the company. These definitely need pillows if you plan to sit long.

Lloyd Flanders has among its collections a variety of seating pieces and tables in aluminum for patio dining and lounging, including a sling lounge chair for two. These designs run the gamut from contemporary to traditional. Some of the chairs have matching umbrellas, and tables come in small rounds, ovals and rectangles. Chairs range from swivel to sling, rocker to glider, even a swivel/rocker.
