‘Red Dragon’ keeps Lecter alive

This is the third time Anthony Hopkins has played the role of Hannibal (the cannibal) Lecter.

What would motivate him to do it again? Hint – the previous films grossed $630 million. “The Silence of the Lambs” won Oscars. Hollywood likes to stick with a winner, a tendency to milk the cow. But not this time. This film can stand alone.

The first few minutes whip information at the audience at warp speed. All we need to know is given in a blur. A serial killer has struck twice, ritualistically killing all family members. The killer will strike again in a few days. FBI profiler Will Graham (Ed Norton) goes to Lecter’s cell to interrogate him and to learn the thought processes of a killer.

Lecter oozes menace. Speaking slowly and quietly, he creates the impression that you may be Superman, but he is solid cryptonite. Even though handcuffed, chained and bound, he is still violent and deadly. This is not a movie that makes you afraid, but it will make you tense.

All the actors do a splendid job. Even the minor parts are filled skillfully. The film has a well-deserved rating of “R” for violence, language and gore.
