Curb-A-Lawn gets edgy for customers

HERMISTON – Shawn Eng has a dream job.

He works outside, owns his own business and is always free on the weekends to pursue his other passion: rodeos.

Eng (pronounced Ing if you call him on the telephone) is the owner of a three-man shop called Curb-A-Lawn in Hermiston.

He pours concrete for curbs, planters, patios, driveways and just about anything else a customer would request.

“We can pour any type of concrete,” Eng said. “We’ve even done a sandbox once.”

Curbing a lawn with concrete is similar to the plastic or rubber edging homeowners use to prevent weeds or grass from growing over flower beds or sidewalks.

“It cuts down on maintenance,” Eng said. “It helps to define a planting area. It’s good for 100 different things.”

Concrete is better than rubber and plastic edging in his opinion, because it lasts longer, he said.

If plain gray concrete edging doesn’t sound appealing, Eng can dress it up, personalizing concrete for customers. He has a design wheel that makes impressions in the concrete. He can decorate the concrete with designs, such as brick shapes, or with colors. He can even draw a design freehand if that’s what the homeowner wants.

The most frequently requested services, Eng said, are tree rings, which define a garden edge around trees and kidney-shaped planters for flower gardens. He said he frequently works in concert with landscaping companies when a customer is redesigning the outside of their home or business.

“We do clover-shaped planters once in awhile, too,” Eng said.

Eng said he insists on perfection.

“All our work is guaranteed. Guaranteed satisfaction,” he said.

Eng will travel for work. He said he’s worked on jobs as far away as John Day and also has done some work in the Tri-Cities. In other words, he said with a shy smile, he’ll go anywhere and do anything a customer wants to improve their yard.
