Santiam Christian defeats Sherman County for title

FOREST GROVE – Santiam Christian proved worthy of the hype as the Eagles ran through the OSAA/US Bank/Les Schwab Tires Class 2A volleyball tournament without dropping a single game.

Santiam Christian defeated Sherman County 25-17, 25-20 to win the championship match Saturday to capture the state title.

Santiam Christian rode the back of Alesha Deesing, the Eagles’ 6-foot-2 standout, who is headed to the University of Washington.

“We were outmatched by the one girl,” Sherman County coach Ron Townsend said. “We just didn’t have an answer for her.”

The Huskies’ loss was their only one of the season.

Deesing was the only unanimous all-tournament team selection, while others on the first team were Sherman County’s Britney Macnab, Willamina’s Caitlin Zimbrick, Santiam Christian’s Addi Radke and Corbett’s Jocelyn Edlin.

Second-team honors went to Sherman’ County’s Marci Bird and Erin Funkhouser, Cascade Christian’s Natalie Dicus, Union’s Kallin Prince, Corbett’s Leila Cuison and Clatskanie’s Cassandra Woods.

Attendance for Saturday was 2,111 with 762 present for the final session. The two-day total was 4,868.
