CONDON – The funeral for longtime Gilliam County resident Mabel Vaughn Lane will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Condon United Church of Christ. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.
Mrs. Lane, 88, of Condon, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Wash.
She was born Sept. 1, 1915, at Mayville, to Jay and Florence McConnell Wright. She was raised at Mayville where she attended grade school and high school. Following graduation at age 16, she attended Monmouth Normal School, graduating with a teaching degree.
On Dec. 25, 1936, she married Eldon A. Vaughn, at Portland.
She taught at Helix where Mr. Vaughn was employed as a ranch hand. They moved to Stanfield where she continued to teach and he farmed, raising alfalfa.
In 1950, they moved to Mayville where Mr. Vaughn was a wheat and cattle rancher and Mrs. Vaughn taught school through the Condon School system. Mrs. Vaughn taught school for nearly 30 years. Mr. Vaughn died in 1969 and Mrs. Vaughn moved into Condon.
On Feb. 1, 1981, she married George Lane at Pasco. They lived at Condon until January of this year when they moved to Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility in Hermiston.
Mrs. Lane was a member of a number of organizations over the years.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and traveling.
Survivors include her husband, George Lane, at home; daughter, Rita Gardener of Corvallis; sons, Jay Vaughn of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Dale Vaughn of Hermiston; stepdaughter, Patty Lane of Hermiston; stepson, Marvin Lane of New Berlin, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her first husband, Eldon, and six brothers and sisters.
