HEPPNER – The third annual Heppner Youth Sports Academy that offers instructional camps to Heppner youth and coaches at a minimal cost is quickly approaching.
The HYSA provides football, basketball and volleyball camps conducted by regional collegiate coaches and their staffs.
“We hope all parents and students take advantage of the opportunity to get top-notch instruction at these camps,” Heppner volleyball coach Terri Gentry said.
The past two years have been a large success according to Heppner Athletic Director Greg Grant, who also coaches football and golf at HHS.
“We’ve had a real good turnout and feel the kids have reaped the benefits of being exposed to top coaches and staff that have put on the camps,” Grant said. “We’re excited again this year and thankful for all the coaches and staff willing to take the time.”
The coaching staff of Linfield University’s Division III National Champion football program will conduct a camp June 7-8. Grades 4-8 will be instructed from 3:45-5:30 p.m., while grades 9-12 will run from 3:45-8 p.m.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our kids to be exposed to a program that’s accomplished a lot,” Grant said.
A basketball camp offered by Gordi James and the staff of Willamette University men’s basketball program will be held June 14-15. Grades 3-5 will run from 9-11 a.m., grades 6-8 will be in session from noon to 3 p.m. and a clinic for grades 9-12 will run from 5-8 p.m.
“The local businesses have stepped forward to provide the coaches and players a great opportunity right here in Heppner,” Heppner boys basketball coach Forrest McKinnis said. “This academy is an indication of the level of support we receive from our community.
“It’s just outstanding.”
A volleyball camp will be conducted June 16-17 by Tricia Wright and the staff of Willamette University. Camp for grades 9-12 will run from 8 a.m. to noon, while elementary and junior high will run from 1-4 p.m.
The HYSA is funded entirely by the community. Business sponsors are Ruggs Ranch, Wheatland Insurance, Bank of Eastern Oregon, Morrow County Grain Growers – C-Store, Morrow County Grain Growers – Polaris dealership, Devin Oil Company, Les Schwab Tire Center and the Heppner Gazette Times. Heppner Booster Club and the Alumni Association are also major contributors to this event.
“We could not begin to do this without the tremendous support that our local businesses give us,” said Grant, who is also the event organizer.
