PENDLETON – Downtown Pendleton’s Bags, Buckles and Bling sells just what its name suggests, along with quite a bit more.

Sunny Waggoner owns and runs the business at 151 S.E. First St. Her name is equally fitting as she comes across with an exuberant business attitude.

Bags, Buckles and Bling is her first retail venture, although she has eight years of experience selling Mary Kay cosmetics, including one as a director. It was contact through Mary Kay that prompted her to go all-in on the business.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to own a little shop,” she said. “I just love what I’m doing.”

For Waggoner, this little shop is her full-time job. The store is packed with purses, belts and jewelry that more than qualify as bling, as well as home and Western style decor, including items from local vendors. Bags, Buckles and Bling carries Don and Lana Bird’s log pine furnishings and Vince Wood’s antique-looking creations.

“I’m trying to keep everything local,” she said.

Waggoner also sells items she makes, such as wood lettering and signs she decorates.

“If I don’t like it or I’m not passionate about it, I won’t sell it,” she said.

Merchandise she makes herself tops out at $75, she said, and that’s only for a few items. The vendors she carries, however, sometimes sell items more than that.

“But their stuff is worth it,” she added.

She said she keeps a finger on the pulse of pricing in the local market.

“It’s been a success because it’s affordable,” she said.

She’s also aware of the market size here. That’s why she said she strives to have one-of-a-kind purses.

Those purses and the related flashy items help the store live up to it’s name. Waggoner said the best selling items are the bling purses and the buckles.

“Anything that has glitz to it,” she said.

And women from the young to the elderly buy them.

Waggoner isn’t just hoping customers show up or come by only once. Rather, she’s created in-store incentives to benefit customers and help build a solid business base. The Hand Bag Club, for example, is a customer referral incentive that allows faithful customers to earn a free purse.
