Tigers rally past TigerScots; Pirates take down Vikings in EOL rivalry win

Published 8:21 am Saturday, February 2, 2008

STANFIELD – The Tigers overcame a big first quarter deficit, rallying

to take the Blue Mountain Conference win 68-63 over the TigerScots

Friday and preserving their place atop the league standings.

Casey Irving led the Tigers (12-7, 10-1 BMC) with 21 points and 10

rebounds. Matt Ellis and Tyler Hawkins added 11 points each while Matt

Dunlap scored 10 points.

    The TigerScots (5-15, 3-8 BMC) took a

17-5 lead at the end of the first period and looked to be in control,

but the Tigers came back with a 23-10 second quarter to lead by one

(28-27) at the half.

With a 27-14 run in the third quarter, the Tigers took their largest

lead of the game, but the TigerScots were not rolling over.

“They started bombing 3-pointers in the

fourth and made it interesting,” Stanfield coach Daniel Sharp said.

Weston-McEwen ended up with five buckets

from beyond the arc but fell short in the end.

Jacob Cain led the TigerScots with 14 points, Miles Thul had 13, Shae

Nelson put in 12 and Brian Duke added 11 points.

UNION 58, HEPPNER 57 –

In Heppner, a last-ditched three-point shot from the Bobcats’ (11-9,

7-4 BMC) Kaden Titus was the difference in this BMC battle.

The Mustangs (13-6, 8-3 BMC) had been

flat all game, according to coach Forrest McKinnis, and it finally bit

them in the fourth quarter in which they were outscored 23-16.

Nacho Elguezabal led Heppner with 18

points and Lane Bailey finished with 12, but McKinnis noted that when

the team travels to Weston-McEwen today, they will have to come out

with much better energy.

– In Boardman, the Pirates (11-8, 3-3 Eastern Oregon

League) avenged two earlier defeats to the rival Vikings (12-7, 3-3

EOL) with a tremendous defensive effort and some timely free throws

down the stretch.

“The kids were pumped up today,”

Riverside coach Clair Costello said. “They pretty much did what I told

them and they came away with a win.”

Defense was the key for the Pirates

Friday, as they held Umatilla to just 42 points and Calen Morelli put

the clamps on Steven Williams, allowing nine to the Vikings’ leading

scorer.
