Popular Salem institution shuts its doors

In certain circles, the Oregon Legislature has an almost cult-like following. Those stricken with the bug seem to relish every moment they spend in Salem when sessions are underway. There’s a certain aura about going to the Capitol to influence legislation, although in many cases it’s more ritual than a reality.
That being said, influence missions to Salem used to be a little more interesting if it could include a trip to Jonathan’s Oyster Bar, a venerable institution downtown and almost within walking distance of the Capitol campus.

Wednesday, Jonathan’s closed. A sign on the door said the restaurant “is closed until further notice.” The sign also asked customers to call Jonathan’s for updates. The owners have filed for bankruptcy – yet another victim of the economic free fall.
I e-mailed a friend in Salem to ask if she had heard the tragic news.
“Yes,” she said. “As soon as I heard about it, I rushed down and put a wreath on the front steps with your name on it.”
