WESTON  — The Weston City Council is contemplating a five-year renewal of the city’s contract with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office.

The council met Tuesday, March 18, at Weston-Athena Memorial Hall to discuss the new agreement, which includes a 14% cost increase for law enforcement services from 2025 to 2030.

Since 2014, the city of Weston has contracted with the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office for police services. The contract requires the sheriff’s office to provide a minimum of 174 hours per month, or 40 hours per week, of services within the city limits or relating to matters occurring within the jurisdiction. These services include enforcement of state criminal and traffic statutes, as well as the discretionary enforcement of city ordinances.

According to the contract, the sheriff’s office will provide labor, supervision, training, equipment and other supplies necessary. Weston will provide office space for the county’s use to complete police reports, conduct interviews and store equipment and evidence.

The city is to pay for the contract on an annual basis, with the cost rising incrementally during the duration of the deal. The city’s last payment, covering the 2024-25 fiscal year, was $148,439. The proposed 14% increase would add an additional $20,781 over the five years for law enforcement services.

The Weston City Council has until July 1 to approve the new contract.
