As we go about maintaining our homes, we routinely check things like the batteries in smoke detectors, replace the air filter in the furnace, and change the oil in our car. But just like our homes, our bodies need some regular attention to stay in top shape—especially as we age. Performing a few simple health checks at home can help you catch potential issues early and give you important insights to discuss with your doctor.
While these self-checks are helpful, they are not a substitute for professional medical care. It’s essential to stay on top of your regular doctor’s visits. And remember, resist the urge to “Google” any concerns you might have—your physician will provide a much more thorough assessment and answer any questions you have.
Here are five important home health checks for older adults:
1. Temperature Check
A simple temperature check can give you an early warning if something’s off. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a normal temperature typically falls between 96.4°F and 98.5°F. If your temperature is significantly higher or lower than this range, it may be a sign of illness or infection.
2. Vision and Hearing
Vision and hearing loss can often occur gradually, so it may not be immediately noticeable. Fortunately, there are free online tests for both vision and hearing that can help you identify potential issues. If you notice any changes, schedule an appointment with your doctor for a more thorough examination.
3. Skin Check
As we age, skin changes become more common, and certain conditions like skin cancer become more prevalent. According to the National Library of Medicine, over 40% of melanoma cases occur in people over 65. Regularly check your skin for any new or changing moles, lesions, or spots that might be itchy, painful, or bleeding. Fair-haired individuals or those who spend a lot of time in the sun are at a higher risk. Catching issues early can make a big difference.
4. Intimate Area Checks
For both men and women, certain cancers—like testicular cancer in men and breast cancer in women—become more common with age. It’s a good idea to check for lumps or changes in these areas at least a couple of times a year. If you find anything unusual, bring it to the attention of your doctor right away.
5. Flexibility and Balance
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, often due to diminished balance and muscle strength. Fortunately, there are simple exercises you can do at home to assess your balance:
-
Sit in a chair and stand up without using your hands for support.
-
March in place while standing.
-
Walk heel-to-toe in a straight line.
-
Stand on one leg for 10 seconds, then try the other leg.
If you’re unsure of your balance, try holding onto a piece of furniture, and make sure someone is nearby in case you need assistance.
