Ah, crisp air, rustling leaves, and the scent of pumpkin spice — autumn is here! This season brings a unique charm that invites us to slow down and savor the moments. Whether gathered around a cozy bonfire with friends and family, attending a harvest festival, or just striking up a conversation in your favorite sweater, autumn provides opportunities to connect with others.

Becky Bailey, the author of Conscious Discipline, explains that the “recipe for connections” involves four key elements: eye contact to establish attentiveness; presence to be fully engaged in the moment; touch (when appropriate and respectful) to build trust and convey warmth; and creating a playful setting to foster a fun, relaxed environment that encourages openness and positive interactions.

By including these four elements during interactions with your kids, you create deeper, more meaningful connections that enhance your relationships and improve your overall well-being. Consider these ideas for autumn interactions, where you can integrate the elements mentioned above:

• Seasonal activities: invite friends and family to join you in apple picking at a local orchard or visit a pumpkin patch.

• Community events: The fall season offers opportunities to participate in local fairs, festivals and farmers markets. Check your community event calendar. All are perfect for meeting new people and trying new things.

• Nature walks and hikes: Enjoy the beautiful fall scenery in local or distant locations by exploring parks or hiking trails and even planning a hiking trip with friends and family.

• Join or create a group: Check your community resources for opportunities to participate in a group based on your interests – or create your own a group.

• Utilize technology: If unable to meet in person, organize a virtual meet-up or check in on loved ones through social media. Distance does not have to be a barrier.

• Host fall-themed events: Organize a potluck or gather for fall-themed snacks like roasting marshmallows around the fire or sipping apple cider. No matter what you serve, make sure to include those you care about.

• Movie/game night: Inviting friends and family over for a themed movie night or game night is a great way to stay connected while staying in.

• Expressing gratitude: A simple thank you note or expression of appreciation is a wonderful way to be present and attentive in your interactions.

• Invest in yourself: Find opportunities to reflect on your personal goals, practice self-care and savor the small moments of joy and happiness that come with the changing season. Autumn is a time of change and renewal, so step into the season with intention and the opportunities it brings.

Regardless of how you build connections this season, remember to be intentional and open to new experiences with friends, family and loved ones. Be present in each moment, cherish the laughter and, most importantly, enjoy the beauty of the season and the warmth of the connections you create. Take this time to reflect on ways to stay connected, remember that every interaction is a chance to strengthen bonds, make someone feel valued, and create joyful moments for others. The bonds you form will bring joy and fulfillment long after the leaves have fallen.
