MILTON-FREEWATER — A clan of Viking warriors and villagers are preparing to conquer Dragon’s Gate Brewery in Milton-Freewater.
The farmhouse brewery, in partnership with the Northwest Viking Alliance, returns to the Nordic middle ages Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13, to host the Northwest Viking Market at 52288 Sunquist Road, Milton-Freewater, complete with live music, theater, vendors and demonstrations.
And Vikings.
Owner Jennifer Gregory said the event will recreate one of the biggest Viking villages in the Pacific Northwest.
“I would say the biggest and most important reason why we put this event together is our authenticity to history,” said Robert Burnsidem, of Northwest Viking Alliance. “We have a lot of people that understand the history of the Viking age in our organization.”
The reenactment crew is hauling a large Viking vessel from Seattle for guests to take pictures with and learn more about the ship. Costumed Norsemen will set up about 50 tent shops on the village grounds. Guests will experience daily life at the merchant market and get a chance to purchase historical reproduction wares from blacksmiths and jewelry crafts from silversmiths.
Attendees can learn Viking skills such as archery and how to build a shield wall during battle. Entertainment includes a live theater production and music performances from three bands — Calico Bones, of Walla Walla, Wolven Wind, of California, and Erik the Bard, of Olympia, Washington.
No village reenactment would be complete without Viking stew, and whole roasted pig and turkey legs for sale. Dragon’s Gate Brewery will be supplying its signature Belgian-style beers, as well as nonalcoholic “butterbeer” and root beer for children.
The event Oct. 12 runs 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 13, 11 a.m.- to 4 p.m. For more information, including ticket prices, visit dragonsgatebrewery.com.
