Unemployment rates rise in July across Northeastern Oregon

SALEM — Unemployment was up across Northeastern Oregon in July, with local jobless rates ranging from 3.5% in Wallowa County to 4.9% in Grant County, according to the latest tabulations from the Oregon Employment Department.

Here’s what the July numbers looked like on a county-by-county basis:

Baker, 4.2%, up from 3.9% in June.

Grant, 4.9%, up from 4.5%.

Morrow, 4.4%, up from 3.5%.

Umatilla, 4.4%, up from 3.7%.

Union, 4.5%, up from 4.2%.

Wallowa, 3.5%, up from 3.3%.

It was a similar story when the numbers were adjusted for normal seasonal fluctuations, with jobless levels up in four of Northeastern Oregon’s six counties and flat in the other two.

Here’s a look at the seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for Northeastern Oregon in July:

Baker, 4.4%, unchanged from June.

Grant, 5.2%, up from 5.0%.

Morrow, 3.7%, up from 3.6%.

Umatilla, 4.0%, up from 3.9%.

Union, 4.6%, unchanged.

Wallowa, 4.3%, up from 4.2%.

The statewide unemployment rate was 4.4% in July, with 89,248 Oregonians out of work from a civilian labor force of just under 2.2 million. The seasonally adjusted rate was lower, at 4.1%.

Nationwide, the average unemployment rate for July was 4.5%, or 4.3% when seasonal fluctuations were taken into account.
