PENDLETON — Chelsie Speer, Pendleton High School volleyball coach and physical education and health instructor, resigned from her position.

According to Kevin Dinning, Pendleton School District director of human resources, Speer resigned from the district “for personal reasons,” though he did not elaborate on what those might be.

The school board accepted Speer’s resignation during its regularly meeting Monday, Aug. 12.

The district hired Speer in 2022 alongside her husband, Justin Speer, who is still employed as a baseball coach and P.E./health instructor, Dinning confirmed. The pair had been working in Walla Walla, but did not comply with Walla Walla Community College’s vaccination requirements during the coronavirus pandemic. They received a religious exemption from the Pendleton School District.

The Bucks under Speer went 10-10 in her first season and then 13-7 in the 2023 season, including 6-0 in Greater Oregon League play. GOL coaches selected Speer as the coach of the year.

The East Oregonian has submitted a public records request for Speer’s letter of resignation and is awaiting further information on Speer’s successor as coach of the girls volleyball team.
