2024 UCF — Kids Camp extends to four days

It is going to be a fun-filled four days for campers.

Fun at the Fair Kids Camp, sponsored by Family Health Associates, is a program for youths who will be going into first through fifth grade this coming school year.

Previous camps ran three consecutive days, but this year added a fourth day. The camp is Tuesday, Aug. 6, through Friday, Aug. 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Kids Camp engages youths in activities all around the fairgrounds — and even in a behind-the-scenes capacity — in addition to doing arts and crafts, science experiments, and music.

They also are able to attend various entertainment events and visit animal barns.

And campers cap their experience Friday, Aug. 9, when the perform on the Les Schwab Stage.

Tammy Wagner — of Echo and the day care coordinator at Umatilla High School — established the Fun at the Fair Kids Camp in 2013, which eventually earned her recognition at the 2015 State Fair Convention.

She came up with the idea when seeing fair staff workers and vendors being followed around by their own kids. Child care was needed, and so she came up with Fun at the Fair Kids Camp.

“My husband, Lucas, and I came up with the Kids Camp idea together, and then he presented it to the board,” Wagner said. “They liked the idea, and so they gave me free rein to do whatever I needed to do.”

Other fair organizers now use Wagner’s innovative program as a model for their own events.

“The idea is that vendors and 4-H parents and staff can bring their kids to have a fun day at the fair rather than having their kids sit in their trailers or sit next to their parents or run around on the grounds,” Wagner said. “Now they can come to my camp.”

Campers do have to be signed up ahead of time though. It is not a drop-off service.

Space for Kids Camp is limited to the first 40 registrants.

Wagner said it reaches capacity with the first few days of registration opening.

The cost of the camp for one child for all three days total is $100, and that includes a daily snack, a camp T-shirt for each day, fair admission and a carnival voucher for one full day of unlimited rides that can be used after the camp ends on Friday or all day Saturday.

Each day, campers need to bring a sack lunch, sunscreen, water and a backpack.

The carnival itself is one activity that will not be a supervised camp activity, so the carnival rides are encouraged for after the camp, using the voucher provided through registration.
