Local roundup: W-M girls and boys win team titles at Columbia River Invite

BOARDMAN — Anthony Nix won three events, and the Weston-McEwen boys cruised to the team title at the Columbia River Invitational on Saturday, May 4, at Riverside High School.

Nix won both hurdle events and the long jump, but took a break from the triple jump a week ahead of the district meet.

Nix ran a PR of 15.65 seconds in the 110 hurdles, which is the top time in the state at the 2A level. He ran the 300 hurdles in 42.44, and captured the long jump title with a leap of 21-2 1/2.

Results for the boys javelin, long jump and 4×400 relay were not available, therefore making team scores unavailable.

Also for the TigerScots, Arden Shaul won the 800 with a PR of 2:06.33, and the 4×100 relay team of Maddox King, Wyatt Parsons, Colson Hall and Mazon Langford placed first with a time of 45.07.

Parson also was second in the 100 (11.43), while Langford was second in the 400 (52.82), third in the shot put (41-9 1/2).

Sebastian Roggiero was second in the 110 hurdles (17.46), Jace Dunlap finished second in the shot put (42-8), and David Webb was third in the 3,000 (10:56.10).

Caleb Sprenger placed second in the discus (125-3), third in the high jump (5-8), and fourth in the shot put (41-7 1/2).

McLoughlin’s Johnny Koklich once again dominated the 100 (11.04) and 200, in which he ran a PR of 22.77. His 200 time is second in the state at the 3A level.

Griswold’s Ethan Reeder ran an 11.82 to finish third in the 100, Noah Walker was third in the 100 hurdles (17.76) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (48.42).

Host Riverside had wins from Pedro Chavez in the high jump (6-0) and 400 (52.81), Eric Pullen in the 3,000 (10:21.27), and Nathen Hammond in the 1,500 (4:18.19).

Chavez also ran a leg on the 4×100 relay team of Jeremias Calvillo, Hugo Ceron and Cooper Cemore that placed second with a time of 46.39.

Umatilla’s Marcos Cooper won the shot put with a PR mark of 44-11, while teammate Luis Campos won the discus with a throw of 135-0, and Roberto Ochoa won the pole vault with a height of 11-6.

Irrigon’s win on the day came in the throwers relay, where Antonio Renteria, Arturo Carmona, William Martindale and Saxon Byers turned in a time of 52.66.

In the girls’ meet, Weston-McEwen ran away with the team title with Riverside and McLoughlin fighting for second and third.

Results for the javelin and shot put were not available, leaving second and third place in the team standings up for grabs.

TigerScot freshman Charlotte Hansell won the 200 with a PR of 28.41, and was second in the triple jump (30-1).

Addy Hall won the 100 hurdles (16.96), and was second second in the 100 (13.68).

Hall and Hansell joined Brynn Brownie and Kelsey Graham on the winning 4×400 relay team, which turned in a time of 4:32.89 — 5 seconds ahead of second-place Mac-Hi.

Also for W-M, Rose White won the discus (96-1), Addison Perkins won the triple jump (30-8 1/2), Graham won the 300 hurdles (50.63), and EvaLena Lieuallen won the 800 (2:40.36).

Riverside’s Leyla Gutierrez won the 100 (13.50), was second in the 200 (28.69), and ran a leg on the 4×100 relay team with America Garcia, Erika Vargas and Kaylee Christy. They placed second (54.19). Christy also won the 400 (1:06.66).

Griswold freshman Amy Weidert won the long jump (15-1 1/2), and was second in the 400 (1:09.32).

Stanfield’s McKenzie Rose won the 1,500 (5:27.29), and the 3,000 (11:40.49). Both times were PRs for the senior. Athina Seidman also added a win for the Tigers in the high jump (4-4).

Umatilla’s Julissa Gonzalez won the pole vault (8-0), while Lexie Soriano (94-8) and Nayeli Gomez (83-8) were second and third in the discus.

SHERMAN COUNTY INVITATIONAL — Ione’s Henry Giefing had a spectacular day in Moro, winning three events and helping the Cardinals to a fourth-place finish in the team standings with 70 points.

Mitchell/Spray/Wheeler won the boys team title with 122 points, followed by Sherman (97) and Klickitat (85).

Giefing won the 100 in a time of 11.34, then turned in a PR of 23.06 to win the 200. His 200 time is the best in the state at the 1A level.

Giefing, just a sophomore, also won the long jump with a mark of 19-4 3/4, and was second in the 400 with a PR of 54.79. It was the first time this season he ran the 400.

Carter Eynetich won the javelin for the Cardinals with a toss of 122-8. He also was fourth in the discus (96-3) and sixth in the shot put (31-7 1/4).

Also for Ione, Leo Lemus was second in the 800 with a PR of 2:30.20, and third in the 400 (59.27).

Boys soccer

HERMISTON 10, KENNEWICK 1 — The Bulldogs reached the 3A state playoffs for the first time since 2019 with a home win over the Lions in the semifinals of the District 8 tournament.

“We had to make sure we secured our ticket in,” Hermiston coach Ricardo Sotelo said of the explosion of goals. “I’m speechless, but it’s a good feeling. Going into this game, I told my boys this is playoff soccer, anything can happen, just go out and play H-Town soccer. We got the result we worked for.”

The Bulldogs (10-8) will host Mead at 5 p.m. May 9 at Kennison Field in Hermiston. Both have qualified for state, but are playing for the district title and state seeding.

The No. 5 Panthers advanced with a 1-0 win over No. 1 Ridgeline.

Hermiston led 4-0 at the half, and were just as dominant in the second half.

“We played whole team defense,” Sotelo said. “I said during the pregame speech, we had to play whole team defense and they did.”

Ruben Mendez, Angel Cadenas and Renee Medrano each had two goals for the Bulldogs, while Carlos Cadenas, Abel Alatorre, Julian Sanchez and Jairo Ramirez Ortega all had one goal.

Medrano and Alatorre also handed out two assists, while Mendez and Joshua Negrete each had one.

Giovanni Villarreal played the first 60 minutes of the game and posted six saves. Gabriel Lara, who has been recovering from two injuries, played the final 20 minutes with one save.

Girls tennis

STANFIELD 4, MCLOUGHLIN 1 — The Tigers swept the singles, and took two of three doubles matches for a road win over the Pioneers.

Jaki Bartoshek won the No. 1 singles match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Norma Rodriguez, and Calliope Mills won at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mac-Hi’s Maria Saldaña.

In doubles, Stanfield’s Aylin Gomez and Kiera Sharp beat Coral Quist-Knopf and Esmeralda Perez 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 1, and Tigers Sarah Thomas and Kylee Almonte won the No. 3 match 7-5, 7-5 over Bella Quist-Knopf and Ava Arredondo.

Mac-Hi’s Jocelyne Arroyo and Isaira Diaz won the No. 2 match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hope Russel and Julietta Ramirez.

Boys tennis

STANFIELD 2, MCLOUGHLIN 1 — The Tiger won the first and third singles matches in a road win over the Pioneers.

Stanfield’s Pablo Arellano won the No. 1 match with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Connor Batchelor, and Efrain Hernandez beat Zach Lamb 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

Mac-Hi’s Bryan Garcia won the No. 2 match with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Jesus Arellano.

College baseball

BLUE MOUNTAIN 4-5, WALLA WALLA 3-4 — The Timberwolves swept the Warriors on Friday in NWAC East play, moving into a tie for first in the East standings at 15-9 with Spokane.

BMCC will host Columbia Basin (13-9) on Wednesday in a key doubleheader.

In the first game against WWCC, the Timberwolves took an early lead, then held off the Warriors down the stretch.

Evan Gant and Kaden Boyle each hit doubles and had an RBI for BMCC, whose pitching staff allowed three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and zero walks.

In the nightcap, BMCC took a 4-0 lead after two innings, and weathered the storm of three WWCC runs over the final three innings for the win.

Boyle went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI, while Gant hit a double and drove in a run. Boyle also scored on a wild pitch.

WWCC scored one run in the ninth, but left the tying run on base when Geoffrey Edgar flew out to right field.
