Local roundup: BMCC sits third in East standings after split with Spokane

PENDLETON — Blue Mountain Community College tried to work its way back to the top of the NWAC East standings on Saturday, April 20, but the Timberwolves split with Spokane, leaving them at 10-6 and tied for third.
Wenatchee Valley leads the East at 12-4, while Spokane is 11-5, and BMCC and Columbia Basin are 10-6.
The Timberwolves won the opening game 3-2, then dropped the second game 4-2.
In the first game, BMCC scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning on a Cooper Dalton RBI single to left field.
BMCC starter Zach Reynolds pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Jace Schow got the save, allowing one hit and no runs over three innings.
The Timberwolves got out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Joaquin Velez-Fucal hit a single to left field that scored Davis Mauzy.
Each team scored one run in the second, and Spokane tied the score at 2-2 in the third.
Mauzy and Evan Gant hit doubles for BMCC, with Mauzy adding two stolen bases.
In the second game, Spokane scored one run in the top of the 10th inning off a Gavin Thennis fielder’s choice to eke out a win and salvage the split.
BMCC held a 2-1 lead after six innings, only to see Spokane score twice in the eight for a 3-2 lead. The Timberwolves got the run back in the bottom of the eighth on a K Boyle RBI single.
After a scoreless ninth, the game went into extra innings. While the Sasquatch scored in the 10th, BMCC ended the game with one man on base.
Kaden Boyle drove in two runs for BMCC, while Gant and Velez-Fucal each had two hits. Starter Dylan Runge went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six. Rocco Loftis took the loss.
Boys soccer
HERMISTON 4, KAMIAKIN 3 — Abel Alatorre and Renee Medrano each scored two goals to help the Bulldogs to a Mid-Columbia Conference road win over the Braves.
Hermiston led 2-1 at the half, then added two more goals to preserve the win.
Sammy Ramirez Ortega, Erick Villarreal and Carlos Cadenas each had one assist for the Bulldogs (5-8 MCC).
Hermiston goalkeeper Giovanni Villarreal had eight saves, and a penalty kick save.
Prep baseball
HEPPNER 12-8, STANFIELD 4-4 — Mason Orem and Keaton Coiner each hit a home run, and the Mustangs moved to 6-0 in Special District 7 play after sweeping the visiting Tigers
Orem and Coiner hit their home runs in the first game, which was a close game until Heppner put four runs on the board in the third to take a 5-2 lead.
The Mustangs (11-4 overall) scored two runs on errors in the third before Coiner hit a two-run, in-the-park home run.
The Tigers rallied for a run in the top of the fifth as Connor Logan hit an RBI double to pull Stanfield within 5-3.
The Mustangs countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, then put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth.
Orem hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and two runs scored on an error in the sixth.
Coiner also hit a triple and finished the game with three RBIs, while Caden George pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Joe Crawford got the start for the Tigers (7-9, 3-3), allowing seven runs on five hit, with three strikeouts. Reliever Noah Morton went 1/2/3, giving up five runs on two hits with five walks.
In the second game, the Mustangs scored six runs over the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Caden George went 2-for-4 with a triple for Heppner, while Caleb George was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Karver Wilkins and Cameron Proudfoot combined on a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Blaine McClure and Joe Crawford each had two hits for the Tigers. McClure took the loss, pitching the first five innings, allowing five runs one five hits with five strikeouts.
IRRIGON 16-11, DUFUR 1-4 — Brayden Locey pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts in the first game, and the Knights swept the visiting Rangers in Special District 7 action.
Irrigon (9-4 overall, 6-3 SD7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first innings, and led 13-0 after two. The Rangers scored one run in the fifth inning, but it didn’t make a dent in the Knights’ lead.
Locey, Kaidan Hussey and Zane Acock hit doubles for Irrigon, with Acock adding three RBIs to his credit.
In the second game, Irrigon took advantage of 12 Dufur errors and six and six walks to run its win streak to six games.
Hussey had two hits for the Knights, while Julian Gomez and Rene Garcia combined on a six-hitter with nine strikeouts.
GRANT UNION 12-7, PILOT ROCK 0-1 — Talon Van Cleave pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener, and Sheldon Lenz struck out 10 in the second game, as the Prospectors swept the Rockets at home in Special District 7 action.
Brock Stelk had two hits for the Rockets (7-5 overall, 1-3 SD7) in the first game, while Tracen Hamby hit a double.
In the second game, GU led 4-0 after the first, and 5-0 before Pilot Rock got on the board in the top of the fourth.
Stelk went 3-for-3 for the Rockets, who had six hits in the game. Hunter Fitzpatrick drove in the one run with an RBI single to right field.
Prep softball
GRANT UNION 19-20, PILOT ROCK 0-3 — The top-ranked Prospectors got a two-hit shutout from Drew Williams in the first game, and three players hit home runs in the second game as Grant Union swept the Rockets on the road in Special District 7 action.
The Prospectors, who have won nine games in a row, are 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the SD7 standings.
In the second game, GU’s Sivanna Hodge hit a solo home run in the first, Halle Parson hit a two-run shot in the fifth, and Reece Jacobs hit a three-run homer in the second.
For Pilot Rock (7-9, 2-7), Paige Hansen went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Jada Deist and Kashley Golden also hit doubles.
In the opener, Deist and Addison Kosey each had a hit for Pilot Rock, which also committed six errors.
Hodge, Savannah Watterson and Jacobs all hit home runs for the Prospectors. Jacobs hit a grand slam in the fourth inning.
HEPPNER 10-9, ECHO/STANFIELD 3-7 — The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a win over the Cougars in the second game of their Special District 7 doubleheader in Heppner.
Heppner’s Morgan Cutsforth hit an RBI single in the sixth to tie the score at 7-7, and Maya Payne hit a two-run single to right field to put the Mustangs (114 overall, 7-0 SD7) out front for good.
The Cougars opened the game with four runs in the first, and led 6-3 after three innings.
Kylee Jackson and Mykael Graham hit home runs for the Cougars, while Jamie Weems hit a double.
In the first game, Echo/Stanfield led 3-0 before Heppner scored three in the third, five in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Cutsforth hit two home runs for Heppner, while Kadie Henrichs hit two doubles, and Payne pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Mazie Reeser and Nevaeh Thew each had a homer for the Cougars (6-10, 2-5), while Reeser threw a complete game with six strikeouts and one walk.
Track and field
The Hermiston boys set a school record in the 4×200 relay at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field in Eugene.
The team of Logan Zumwalt, Justus Counsell, Jaime Ramirez Ortega and Gio Gonzague turned in a time of 1:32.25 to finish third in Section 2 and 17th overall in a field of 41 teams.
Late Friday night, Hermiston’s 4,000 distance medley relay team of John Mills, Ryan Allen, Franco Gonzalez Mendoza and Jaysen Rodriguez won Section 3 with a time of 10:37.42. The team placed 14th overall.
Bradley Hottman placed 16th in the discus with a throw of 141-6. Simon Rosselli of Mead won the event with a mark of 180-7 3/4.
The Hermiston girls 4×200 relay team of Madeline Jared, Ava Courtney, Abigayl Dainty and Karina Ortiz turned in a time of 1:48.63. They were fourth in Section 3 and 21st overall.
The 4×100 team of Jared, Alondra Risueno, Ortiz and Dainty ran a 50.22 to finish third in Heat 6, and 25th overall.
In the girls discus, Avonlea Edwards was 19th (106-10 1/4), while Alexis Ackerman was 20th in the javelin (111-5 1/2), and Jared was 21st in the long jump (16-0 1/2).
1A/2A/3A REGIONAL INVITATIONAL — Lily Nichols won the 1,500, was second in the 800, and ran a leg on the 4×400 relay team that placed second as the Heppner girls finished third in the team standings at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
Imbler won the girls team title with 89 points, with Vale a close second with 88, and the Mustangs third with 68.
Nichols ran a 5:13.88 in the 1,500, winning the event by 11 seconds over second-place runner Addie Saunders of Vale. She turned in a time of 2:30.69 in the 800, and was fifth in the 300 hurdles at 51.99.
The 4×400 relay team of Arianna Worden, Healy Hisler, Nichols and Hallee Hisler clocked a 4:20.53. It was the first time in four meets this season the Mustangs did not win the event.
Hallee Hisler also placed third in the 100 (13:40), second in the 200 (27.75), and Healy Hisler was seventh in the 200 (29.25).
Worden also placed third in the 800 (2:34.61), and third in the 3,000 (12:05.04), while Riley Archer was sixth in the 1,500 (5:37.27).
McLoughlin picked up half of its points in the javelin, where Madi Perkins won with a throw of 112-8, and teammate Addy Brown was second (107-5).
Daisy Koklich placed fifth in the 100 hurdles (18:10) and sixth in the triple jump (30-4 1/2) for the Pioneers, while Mikayla Bird was sixth in the 3,000 (12:52.61).
The Mac-Hi 4×100 relay team of Brown, Lainie Ellis, Abi Perkins and Madi Perkins finished sixth in a time of 55.74.
For Riverside, Kaylee Christy was third in the 400 (1:08.50), while the 4×100 relay team of Erika Vargas, Christy, Leiliana Lissman and Leyla Gutierrez was seventh (55.89).
Griswold freshman Amy Weidert had a leap of 15-2 3/4 to place second in the long jump, with teammate Saige Jensen eighth at 14-1 1/2. The Grizzlies also were eighth in the 4×100 relay as Ebany Van Wechel, Jensen, Kaylee Rand and Weidert turned in a time of 56.09.
McKenzie Rose led Stanfield/Echo with a second-place finish in the 3,000 (12:01.49). She also was fifth in the 1,500 (5:36.16). Jude Royer was fifth in the shot put (30-5), and Haley Palmateer was fifth in the javelin (104-4).
In the boys’ meet, Ione sophomore Henry Giefing won the 200 ()23.97, and placed second in the long jump (20-4) and the 100 (11.82).
Nixyaawii’s Landon Picard won the high jump (6-0), and Sun Schimmel was sixth in the 200 (24.99).
Riverside’s Pedro Chavez ran a 52.07 to place second in the 400. He also was second in the high jump (5-10). Teammate Nathen Hammond finished third in the 1,500 (4:25.86) and eight in the 800 (2:10.59). With times were a personal best.
Griswold’s Ethan Reeder was fifth in the long jump with a PR of 19-1 1/2, and sixth in the 100 (12:35).
For Stanfield/Echo, Jack Sperr was second in the triple jump with a PR of 39-10, and was third in the high jump (5-8).
Vale won the boys team title with 126 points, with Imbler a distant second with 87. Riverside was fifth (56), while Ione was eighth (26), Irrigon ninth (25.5), Stanfield/Echo 10th (23) and Mac-Hi 11th (22).
