Local roundup: TigerScots beat Vernonia to extend win streak to 12 games

PENDLETON — Weston-McEwen ran its win streak to 12 games with a 56-21 victory over Vernonia on Thursday, Dec. 28, at the 2A Pendleton Preview at the Pendleton Convention Center.

“We put in a solid defensive effort, with good ball movement and shooting on offense,” W-M coach Jeremy Wolf said. “It’s always good when everyone contributes on both ends.”

The TigerScots (12-1) raced out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter, and turned their lead into a 38-8 advantage at the half.

The second half was closer, with W-M outscoring the Loggers 18-13.

Freshman Charlotte Hansell led the TigerScots with 16 points, while Kylie Thornton added 11 points.

Morgan Dennis, Momi Leininger and Avery Wolf each had five points for Vernonia (1-8).

KNAPPA 42, HEPPNER 38 — The Loggers outscored the Mustangs 13-9 in the fourth quarter to eke out a win at the 2A Pendleton Preview at the Pendleton Convention Center.

The teams were tied at 29-29 after three quarters, and Knappa got three points each from Mylie Lempea, Taylor Pass and Ariana Miller in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The Mustangs (10-2) went 7 of 9 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t catch the Loggers.

Hallee Hisler led the Mustangs with 20 points, while Lily Nichols added five points.

Lempea, Alondra Pina and Hadassah Maher each had eight points for the Loggers (7-3).

MOSCOW (ID) 54, PENDLETON 33 — Maya Anderson had a game-high 22 points to lead the Bears over the Bucks at the Avista Holiday Tournament at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

“We started slow, getting behind 7-0, but rallied and took a lead at halftime,” Pendleton coach Tim Foster said. “Hailey (Schmidt) had a good half scoring the ball, and we got a few buckets from Melanie (Boatman), Miranda (Medrano) and Nessa (Neveau). Second half, we came out flat. We didn’t play with the kind of energy we needed and Moscow took advantage.”

Pendleton (5-6) led 20-18 at the half, with Schmidt scoring nine of her 18 points over the first two quarters.

Anderson scored 13 of her points in the third quarter as the Bears outscored the Bucks 20-7 for a 38-27 lead. Moscow dominated the fourth quarter with a 16-6 run.

“We did a decent job slowing down their two 6-footers, but when they started hitting from the outside we didn’t respond and it snowballed from there. We have a rematch with Lewiston tomorrow (Friday) morning. If we bring the right energy and sustain it, we’ll have a good chance to get a win.”

LAKEVIEW 42, STANFIELD 41 — The Tigers’ last-second shot for the win was too late as the Honkers escaped with the win at the Crusader Classic at Salem Academy High School.

“We started behind by not scoring for a quarter and a half,” Stanfield coach Dan Sharp said.

The Honkers led 8-0 after the first quarter and 16-6 at the half. The Tigers went on a 19-8 run in the third quarter for a 25-24 lead.

Lakeview’s Sofia Zendejas scored all nine of her points — off three 3-pointers — to key an 18-16 run in the fourth quarter as the Honkers eked out the win.

Kayla Monkus had a game-high 21 points for the Tigers (5-2), who saw their four-game win streak come to an end. Saira Arellano added seven points.

Kenna Stratton led the Honkers (3-4) with 19 points.

YAMHILL-CARLTON 35, RIVERSIDE 30 — The Tigers held the Pirates scoreless in the first quarter, then used a 16-7 run in the fourth quarter to slip past Riverside at the North Marion Holiday Tournament in Aurora.

The Tigers led 8-0 after the first, and 15-9 at the half, but a 14-4 run by the Pirates in the third quarter gave them a 23-19 lead.

Charlie Vertner scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, all from the free-throw line as the Tigers (6-2) held on for the win.

Julie Magaña and Crystal Sanchez each had eight points for the Pirates (6-4).

ECHO 59, COVE 19 — Every player scored for the Cougars as they cruised to a victory over the Leopards at the Eastern Oregon Holiday Crossover at Baker High School.

Mayela De La Fuente scored six of her 10 points in the first quarter as the Cougars took an 18-2 lead. Kenzie Hendrix scored seven of her 10 points in the third as Echo stretched its lead to 51-16.

Nevaeh Thew added eight points for Echo (6-4), while Ella Stahl chipped in six.

Emma Carson led the Leopards (4-8) with seven points.

PILOT ROCK 53, HARPER 31 — The Rockets used a strong second half to rally for a win over the Hornets at the Eastern Oregon Holiday Crossover at Baker High School.

Trailing 25-20 at the half, Pilot Rock (4-5) went on a 21-5 scoring spree — led by Ali Smith’s eight points — in the third quarter for a 41-29 lead. A 12-1 run in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach for Harper.

Smith hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points, while Paedyn Bennett added 13 points, and Paige Hansen nine for the Rockets.

Lindsay Talbot led the Hornets (1-9) with a game-high 21 points.

IONE/ARLINGTON 39, DAYVILLE/MONUMENT 16 — Victoria De La Torre scored 13 points, and the Cardinals ran their win streak to four games with a home victory over Tigers.

De La Torre scored five of her points in the first quarter as I/A got out to a 10-3 lead. The Cardinals led 17-6 at the half, then put the game away with a 22-10 run in the second half.

Grace Claughton added seven points for the Cardinals (6-4), while Najiah Knight added six.

Sierra May led the Tigers (2-7) with seven points.

NESTUCCA 58, IRRIGON 26 — Makayla Webber scored all of her game-high 19 points in the first half to lead the Bobcats to a home win over the Knights.

Nestucca took control of the game in the first quarter with a 21-6 lead. The Bobcats increased their lead to 40-12 at the half.

Kaydence Emery led the Knights (1-9) with 11 points, while Ruby Chavez added six points.

Boys basketball

KENNEDY 47, RIVERSIDE 34 — The Trojans put an end to the Pirates’ 10-game win streak with a victory at the 2A Pendleton Preview at the Pendleton Convention Center.

Kennedy (6-2) led from the start, taking a 12-3 lead after the first quarter, and a 23-10 lead at the half.

Each team scored 24 points in the second half, but Riverside (10-1) could not dig itself out of the first-half deficit.

Riley Lantis led the Pirates with 16 points, while Cooper Cemore added 11.

Brody Kleinschmit and Jaydon Estrada led Kennedy with 15 points apiece.

KNAPPA 40, HEPPNER 38 — The Loggers were able to stay one step ahead of the Mustangs in the second half to escape with a win at the 2A Pendleton Preview at the Pendleton Convention Center.

Knappa (4-4) led 21-16 at the half, and kept that small lead throughout the second half to hand the Mustangs their fourth consecutive loss.

Landon Mitchell led Heppner (6-6) with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Cameron Proudfoot added nine points, and Mason Orem six points and five rebounds.

Treven Moreland led Knappa with 12 points and nine rebounds, with Jacob Ogier adding 11 points and two steals.

WESTON-MCEWEN 63, VERNONIA 37 — Trysten Burns scored 14 points, and the TigerScots got back in the win column with a victory over the Loggers at the 2A Pendleton Preview at the Pendleton Convention Center.

W-M cruised to a 30-18 lead at the half and never looked back.

Mazon Langford added 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals for the TigerScots (5-7), while Anthony Nix added 11 points.

Logan Wolf had a game-high 24 points for the Loggers (1-8).

MOSCOW 55, PENDLETON 50 — Traiden Cummings hit a 3-pointer with two minutes left in the game to give the Bears the final dagger they needed to beat the Bucks at the Avista Holiday Tournament at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

“It was a back and forth game,” Pendleton coach Ron Murphy said. “They got up 10 or 12 in the second quarter, but we battled back. We just have to eliminate those little moments in each quarter when we go flat and turn the ball over. That gets us every time. We played really hard, we just have to be a little smarter.”

Moscow (4-2) got out to a 12-7 lead after the first quarter’s and led 29-22 at the half.

The Bucks (2-9) battled back in the second half, tying the game a couple of times before Cummings hit his 3-pointer.

Ben Jennings led the Bucks with 18 points, while Ben Hopkins added 10 points. Ian Hillman added 16 points for the Bears.

Pendleton will play Kendrick (ID) at 9 a.m. Friday.

STANFIELD 70, BLANCHET CATHOLIC 35 — Landon Bailey had 13 points and six steals to lead the Tigers to a victory over the Cavaliers at the Crusader Classic at Salem Academy High School.

Stanfield was in control from the start, leading 30-21 at the half before exploding for 40 points in the second half.

“We have been hungry to play the way we did,” Stanfield coach Rylie Smith said. “Great team win. Look to keep it going tomorrow against Horizon Christian.”

Pablo Arellano added 11 points and five assists, while Connor Logan had 10 points and seven rebounds, and James Patterson 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Jacob Fromwiller led the Cavaliers (2-5) with seven points.

DAYTON 67, UMATILLA 44 — The Pirates used a big first half to take control of the game early and hand the Vikings a loss at the Crusader Classic at Salem Academy High School.

Dayton (5-5), which has won three games in a row, sailed to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, and led 44-22 at the half.

Umatilla (7-3) played even with the Pirates in the second half, but could not make up the deficit from the first half.

Micheal Montez led the Vikings with 11 points and four assists, while Mason Munoz added eight points and three steals, and Troy Frost seven rebounds.

Clyde Rosenberg led the Pirates with a game-high 25 points, with Tanner Gentry adding 12.

COVE 71, ECHO 54 — Wyatt Burgess scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to power the Leopards to a win over the Cougars at the Eastern Oregon Holiday Crossover at Power Valley High School.

Echo (6-4) got off to a slow start, trailing 18-9 after the first quarter and 36-21 at the half. The Cougars got their mojo back in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Dom Curiel led Echo with 20 points, with Mack Murdock adding 10 and Tyler Campbell eight.

PILOT ROCK 64, HARPER 52 — Logan Ford had his way with the Hornets, scoring 27 points as the Rockets picked up a win at the Eastern Oregon Holiday Crossover at Power Valley High School.

Pilot Rock (3-6) led 16-11 after the first quarter, but Harper stormed back with a 17-11 run in the second quarter for a 30-27 lead at the half.

The Rockets got back on track in the second half, outscoring the Hornets 37-22 to secure the win.

James Lunzmann added 17 points for Pilot Rock, while Lewis Hansen chipped in 10.

Freshman Richard Joyce led the Hornets (1-8) with 20 points, while Landon Buttram added 13.

IONE/ARLINGTON 66, DAYVILLE/MONUMENT 35 — Henry Giefing and Azriel Borghese each had 20 points as the Cardinals ended a seven-game skid with a home win over the Tigers.

I/A took control of the game from the tip-off, taking a 24-8 lead after the first quarter, and 41-20 at the half.

Carter Eynetich added 10 points for the Cardinals (2-7).

Wyatt Suchorski led the Tigers (0-9) with 12 points.

Girls wrestling

Irrigon’s Stephanie Romero won the 235-pound title at the Hanford Winter Cup, pinning all three of her opponents in 3 minutes or less.

Romero received a bye in the first round, then pinned Rebeka Alvarez of Prosser in 1:38 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Romero pinned Royal’s Analy Castillo in 2:39 to reach the title bout.

In the championship match, Romero earned a reversal in the second round, then pinned Baker’s Madison Meyer in 3 minutes to claim the title.

Chloe Wilson-Claassen of Irrigon placed fifth at 235, getting a forfeit from Sunnyside’s Aleyah Barajas in the fifth-place match.

Also for the Knights, Brittanie Ely was second at 155, losing by fall to Hanford’s Dayna Enderlin in 1:36 in the championship match.

For Riverside, Mayte Pacheco was sixth at 100 pounds, Katelyn Wiseman was sixth at 125.

Sunnyside won the team title with 161 points, with Quincy second with 126. Irrigon was 14th with 52 points, while Riverside was 27th with 21 points.

Boys wrestling

Pendleton went 3-2 on the first day of the Northwest Duals at the Linn County Expo Center in Albany.

The Bucks opened the day with a 48-33 win over Sunset, winning six consecutive matches from 126 to 157.

In the second round, Sprague topped Pendleton 39-33, and West Linn followed with a 55-18 victory over the Bucks.

Pendleton got back on track with a 40-39 win over Kentwood. The Bucks picked up a forfeit at 285 to seal the win.

The Bucks finished the day with a 54-18 victory over Century.

Aidan Perkins of Pendleton went 5-0 on the day at 175 pounds for the Bucks, recording four pins and one forfeit. Owen Golter went 3-0 at 144 pounds, while Cole Roy (138) and Kaleb Lillie (285) were 4-1.

Oregon Farwell (120), Landon Willman (126) and Jack DeGrofft (132) were 3-2 on the day.

Pendleton is back in action Saturday with three more duals.

Swimming

Hermiston’s James Pihl added two more district qualifying times to his credit at the Winter Invite at Whitman College in Walla Walla.

Pihl surpassed the qualifying mark in the 200 free with a time of 2:20.94, and in the 500 free with a time of 6:35.10.

Also hitting a qualifying mark was Eli Moon in the 100 free, clocking a 1:05.04.

The Bulldogs, who had just six swimmers available for the meet, were eighth in the 400 free relay (4:36.18), and 12th in the 200 free relay (1:54.64).
