PENDLETON — Mannahouse Academy proved to be too much for Nixyaawii to handle Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament, as the Lions beat the Golden Eagles 63-46.

Mannahouse (4-2) bolted out of the gates to take a 26-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, powered by eight points from Mattias Tonning.

Nixyaawii went on a 13-8 run in the second to pull within 34-25 at the half.

The Lions, who placed fourth at the 2A state tournament last year, took control of the game for good with a 16-9 scoring spree in the third quarter.

Baron Moses had 16 points for Nixyaawii (3-3), along with nine rebounds and four assists. Sun Schimmel added six points and hauled down eight rebounds. Rylen Broson added nine points.

Tonning led the Lions with 17 points, while Caleb Dickinson and Nolan Schweiss each added 11.

The Golden Eagles are back in action Tuesday at Stanfield.

HEPPNER 65, ECHO 55 — Landon Mitchell had a big night with 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a home win over the Cougars.

Heppner (6-2), which has four in a row, opened the game with a 20-12 lead in the first quarter, and led 27-24 at the half. The Cougars used a 23-19 run in the third quarter to take a 47-46 lead with one quarter to play.

Caden George scored seven of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs went on a 19-8 run to pull out the win. George also had six rebounds and four steals.

Mason Orem added nine points and 12 rebounds, while Cameron Proudfoot added seven points and eight rebounds.

Dom Curiel finished with 26 points for Echo (4-3), including five 3-pointers, and five assists. Tyler Campbell added 12 points, and Mack Murdock had seven.

MCLOUGHLIN 45, CATLIN GABEL 41 — Rajdeep Singh poured in 20 points to lead the Pioneers to the Riverdale Invite title with a win over the Eagles in Portland.

Mac-Hi (5-1), which has won four in a row, trailed 18-16 at the half. The Pioneers regrouped in the second half, going on a 29-23 run to secure the win. Singh had eight of his points in the fourth quarter to power the Pioneers.

Giovanny Sandoval added nine points for Mac-Hi, while David Hernandez added six.

Miles Wolahan led the Eagles (4-2) with 14 points, with Isaac Robinette adding 10.

RICHLAND 79, HERMISTON 60 — The Bulldogs played right with the Bombers for three quarters, but Richland exploded for 22 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for a Mid-Columbia Conference win at the Dawg House.

Hermiston led 16-15 after the first quarter, then trailed 34-29 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs had a 45-42 lead in the last couple of minutes after a Bradley Hottman 3-pointer, but the Bombers made a couple of layups and hit a few free throws to take a 57-51 lead with one quarter to play.

Drake Devin led Hermiston with 23 points, while Grant Olsen added 12 and seven rebounds. The Bulldogs (0-4 MCC) were a perfect 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.

Jack Forbes led the Bombers (3-0 MCC) with 21 points, while Josh Woodard chipped in 20 and 6-10 senior Luke Westerfield added 17 points and eight rebounds.

WESTON-MCEWEN 86, CENTRAL LINN 59 — Bryson Choin and Dylan Monaco each scored 23 points as the TigerScots cruised past the Cobras at Heppner High School.

Weston-McEwwen (4-4) had the upper hand all game, leading 24-12 after the first quarter, and 50-22 at the half. The TigerScots’ lead grew to 73-48 after three quarters.

Choin also had five steals and three blocks, while Trysten Burns added 16 points, Caleb Sprenger chipped in eight points, nine rebounds and two steals, and Easton Berry had six assists and three steals.

Cody Dickerson led the Cobras (2-3) with 22 points, while Coen Schneiter added 18.

PILOT ROCK 51, WALLOWA 48 — The Rockets picked up their first win of the season with a victory over the Cougars at the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament Nixyaawii High School.

Tied at 13-13 after the first quarter, the Rockets (1-6) used a 22-12 scoring spree in the second quarter to take control of the game.

The Cougars came back with a 14-7 run in the third quarter, but could not make up the difference.

Logan Ford scored seven of his 16 points in the second quarter for the Rockets. James Lunzmann added 12 points for Pilot Rock.

Isaac Barnum led the Cougars (1-8) with 23 points.

GRISWOLD 60, WESTON-MCEWEN JV 52 — Ethan Reeder scored nine of his 17 points in the second half to lead the Grizzlies past the TigerScots at the Helix Tournament.

Tied at 24-24 at the half, the Grizzlies out scored W-M 36-28 in the second half to secure the win.

Ethan Harlow added 14 points for the Grizzlies (2-5), while Eli Boatright had 10.

Tristan Parrish led the TigerScots with 27 points, while Colby Perkins chipped in 11.

SHERMAN 48, IONE/ARLINGTON 35 — The Cardinals opened their Big Sky League campaign with a road loss to the Huskies.

Sherman led from the start, taking a 17-11 lead after the first, and 35-25 after three quarters.

Ryder Stewerd led the Cardinals (1-6 overall, 0-1 BSL) with 12 points, while Henry Giefing added seven.

Jamie Phelps led the Huskies (8-0, 2-0) with 22 points.

STANFIELD 70, FAITH BIBLE 55 — The Tigers picked up their first win of the season with a victory over the Falcons at the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament at Nixyaawii High School.

“Tonight was a much-needed win,” Stanfield coach Rylie Smith said. “Been on a five-game losing streak stretching from last season’s playoff loss. We had a slow first quarter offensively, but we were locked in defensively. Great team win.”

Stanfield fell behind 7-1 at the end of the first quarter, but came back to pull within 20-19 at the half.

The Tigers owned the second half, outscoring the falcons 51-35 for the win.

Pablo Arellano led the Tigers (1-4) with 22 points, while Landon Bailey added 20 points, six steals and five assists, and Conner Logan had seven points, five rebounds and two assists. James Patterson chipped in four points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Eamon Anderson led the Falcons (4-2) with 15 points, while Will Klein added 13.

Girls basketball

MCLOUGHLIN 33, CATLIN GABEL 29 — The Pioneers picked up their second win of the season by beating the Eagles at the Riverdale Invite in Portland.

Tied at 26-26, the Pioneers (2-5) outscored the Eagles 7-3 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Madi Perkins scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to fuel Mac-Hi’s run.

Aisling Giguere added five points for Mac-Hi, while Addie Banks chipped in four.

Ava Austria led Catlin Gabel (0-6) with a game-high 12 points.

WESTON-MCEWEN 42, CENTRAL LINN 29 — The TigerScots have been road warriors this season, playing seven of their eight games on the road. The one constant through it all has been winning.

W-M (7-1) added another win after beating the Cobras at Heppner High School.

“With one home game so far, it’s been a journey in more ways than one,” W-M coach Jeremy Wolf said. “We’re pleased to see them stick together through it all.”

Central Linn (1-3) led 7-3 after the first quarter, but it was all W-M from there.

The TigerScots went on a 12-0 run in the second quarter for a 15-7 lead at the half, and led 28-16 after three quarters.

Kelsey Graham led W-M with eight points, while Brooklyn Parker, Addy Hall and Kylie Thornton each added six.

Addie Wolff led the Cobras with 13 points, with Jayne Neal adding 10.

RICHLAND 71, HERMISTON 53 — The Bombers got off to a hot start and never looked back in handing the Bulldogs a Mid-Columbia Conference loss at the Dawg House.

Richland led 17-9 after the first quarter, and 36-23 at the half.

Aspyn Inners led the Bulldogs with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Izzy Simmons had 14 points and six rebounds, and Lucy Teegarden 10 points.

MacKenzie Schulz led Richland with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Macie Milum added 15 points and six rebounds.

WALLOWA 58, PILOT ROCK 29 — Sophie Moeller poured in 24 points, including 18 in the second half, to power the Cougars past the Rockets at the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament at Nixyaawii High School.

Wallowa led 24-16 at the half, then pulled away with a 20-4 run in the third quarter.

Paige Moffit led the Rockets (2-5) with nine points, while Paige Hansen added six.

Zoe Hermens added 18 points for Wallowa (6-3).

IONE/ARLINGTON 39, SHERMAN 26 — Najiah Knight and Grace Claughton each had 10 points to lead the Cardinals to a Big Sky League road win over the Huskies.

I/A (4-4 overall, 2-0 BSL) led from the start, taking a 7-2 lead in the first, and leading 21-11 at the half.

Knight hit all three of the Cardinals’ 3-pointers, while Phegley Padberg chipped in six points.

Sherman (4-3, 1-1), which played without senior Sophie Hulke, was led by Allison Rolfe with eight points.

ECHO 43, HEPPNER 12 — The Mustangs had their seven-game win streak snapped with a home loss to the Cougars.

Echo shut down Heppner’s Hallee Hisler, Hadlie Nation and Delaney Stefanie, who combined for just five points.

On the other end of the court, the Cougars (3-4) raced out to a 28-8 lead at the half and were never challenged.

Nevaeh Thew led Echo with 15 points, while Kenzie Hendrix added 10 and Cameron Estes had seven.

Lily Nichols led the Mustangs with five points.

STANFIELD 52, FAITH BIBLE 27 — The Tigers improved to 4-1 on the season with a victory over the Falcons at the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament at Nixyaawii High School.

Stanfield got off to a good start, taking a 17-6 lead after the first quarter, and led 21-12 at the half. The Tigers then used a 31-13 run in the second half to secure the win.

Kayla Monkus and Kahleigha Haney each had 12 points for the Cougars, while Saira Arellano added nine.

Taylor Reha led the Falcons (4-2) with 12 points.

GRISWOLD 50, WESTON-MCEWEN JV 21 — Elliana Boatright had 19 points, and Saige Jensen added 14 to lead the Grizzlies to a win over the TigerScots at the Helix Tournament.

“It was a very good game for us,” Griswold coach Kevin Porter said. “We played well for four quarters. Couldn’t be more happy for the girls. They have worked so hard, and it’s nice to see them get rewarded for that hard work.”

NIXYAAWII 56, PENDLETON JV 38 — The Golden Eagles moved to 2-4 on the season with a victory over the visiting Bucks at the Bouncin’ Cancer Tournament.

Nixyaawii took a 15-10 lead after the first quarter, and held a 28-16 lead at the half. Pendleton cut the deficit to 33-29 by the end of the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles went on a 23-9 run in the fourth quarter to leave no doubt.

Ella Stewart led Nixyaawii with 19 points, while Amariana Willingham added 16 and Liana Stewart 10.

Khimora Scott led Pendleton with 23 points, including three 3-pointers, and an 8-for-10 performance at the free-throw line.

Boys wrestling

Hermiston faced some of the best competition they will see before state at Tri-State at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene.

Freshman Aidan Larson was the highest-placing Bulldog, taking second at 126 pounds. He lost a 5-2 decision to Evan Benitez of Grandview in the championship match.

Also for the Bulldogs, Ben Larson placed fifth at 170, beating Ridge Kehr of La Grande 10-3.

Hermiston picked up two placings at 285, with Maximus Ugarte placing sixth, and Dominic Echeverria eighth.

The Bulldogs finished 10th in the team race with 109.5 points. Bishop Kelly (Idaho) won the team title eight 218 points, with Mead second at 211.5.

ELGIN MEMORIAL CLASSIC — Heppner’s Landon McMahon Lucas finished second at 190 pounds to Goff of Weiser (Idaho), who won the championship match with a 9-2 decision.

To reach the title match, McMahon earned a 10-5 decision over Alex Finley of Grant Union in the semifinals.

Enterprise ran away with the team title with 207 points, while Heppner was eight with 68 points.

Also for Heppner, Jaime Cavan finished third at 215, pinning Russel Walden of Baker in 1:27. Cavan made it to the semifinals, where he lost a 15-6 major decision to Dex Dunlap of La Grande.

Also placing third for the Mustangs was Zachary Brown at 157, who pinned Riley Martin of Baker in 3:07 in the third-place match. Brown advanced to the semifinals, where he was pinned by Nyssa’s Ashton Wilson in 5:26.

Connor Wilson was sixth for Heppner at 165, while Tyelor Moore was sixth at 175.

MAC-HI CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT — McLoughlin won two titles at its own holiday tournament, but Walla Walla dominated the event, winning the team title with 193 points.

College Place was a distant second with 79, while Riverside was third (72.5), the host Pioneers fourth (58.5), and Umatilla fifth (16).

Dallen Duncan won the 132-pound title for the Pioneers, earning a 13-0 major decision over Axel Paredes of Riverside in the championship match.

Cooper Yensen picked up the 150-pound title, pinning Walla Walla’s Trenton Sams in 4:32 in the title bout.

Francisco De La Rose was second at 190 for Mac-Hi, losing the title match by fall in 5:06 to Parker Hodgen of College Place.

Also for the Pioneers, Tyler Hoel was third at 126, David Werdeman was fourth at 138, Javian Romero was third at 144, and Rocky McClellan was third at 215.

For Riverside, Anthony Castaneda was second at 120, losing the title match to Elijah Bauer of Walla Walla by fall in 1:48. Sam Lopez was second at 126, Bryan Perez was third at 138, Aiden Murillo was fourth at 165, and Allen Rodriguez was second at 285, getting pinned in the title match by Walla Walla’s Kyle Mauch in 3:01.

Umatilla’s Luis Campos-Mendoza was third at 285.

Girls wrestling

Only six weight classes were contested at the Mac-Hi Christmas Tournament, with Riverside’s Katelyn Wiseman winning the 130-pound title with a 2:15 pin over Journey Cavan-Harris of Heppner.

Walla Walla won the team title with 76 points, with Riverside second with 37, followed by Heppner (35), College Place (18), McLoughlin (14) and Umatilla (13).

Also for the Pirates, Julian Williams was third at 145, and Dairys Pena was fourth at 120.

Grace Aufdermauer of Umatilla won the 190-pound title, with Heppner’s Keeley Narins second, and Sarah Munkers third.

Also for Umatilla, Miley Carrasco was second at 170, and Ryle Sanchez was fourth at 155.

Heppner’s Loren Trujillo was third at 120, while Denisse Bracamontes was fourth at 130.

Mac-Hi’s Brynlee Miller finished second at 155, winning two of her three matches.

Swimming

The Pendleton and La Grande girls tied for first with 105 points at the La Grande December Invite.

The Bucks won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:55.33, with Gate Pitner leading off the team that included Sophie Nelson, Blanca Botello Martin and Saralen Campbell.

Pitner also swam the anchor leg on the 200 medley relay team that placed second with a time of 2:11.37. Also on the team were Maryn Broker, Josie Nelson and Botello Martin.

In the individual events, Pitner was second in the 50 free (28.07) and second in the 100 free (1:04.65).

Campbell swam to a second-place finish in the 200 free (2:15.86), and was second in the 100 butterfly (1:15.21).

Botello Martin placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:09.86), and was third in the 200 IM (2:35.00).

In the boys division, Pendleton’s Jack Bonzani won the 50 free in a time of 25.93, and won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.29 — 5 seconds ahead of the next man.

Bonzani also swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 free relay (4:45.00), along with Nathan Burcham, Mason Morioka and Khoda Brown.

Bonzani and the Bucks were third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:59.52. Also on the team were Brown, Morioka and Burcham.

The La Grande boys won the team title with 187 points, while Pendleton was second with 159.

BLUE DEVIL INVITE — Hermiston’s James Pihl finished 12th in the 200 IM (2:46.27), and was 19th in the 100 free (1:03.14) at Whitman College in Walla Walla.

“We had a small but mighty crew today,” Hermiston coach Tammy Fisher said.

Eli Moon finished 13th in the 500 free, and hit a district qualifying mark with his time of 6:56.47. He also was 28th in the 100 breaststroke (1:33.99).

Barrett Stanek was 17th in the 100 butterfly (1:38.04), and Tate Eddo was 22nd in the 50 free (27.78).

Pullman won the team title with 565 points, with Hanford right behind with 551.5. Hermiston was ninth with 21.

College women’s basketball

BLUE MOUNTAIN 81, CHEMEKETA 72 — Josie Wilson and Taylor Bull each had 17 points to lead the Timberwolves to a home win over the Storm.

Chemeketa played behind the entire afternoon, trailing 20-12 after the first quarter, and 38-26 at the half. The Storm put together a 28-21 run in the fourth quarter, but could not catch BMCC.

Kyella Picard came off the bench to add 10 points, four rebounds and three steals for BMCC, while Leanna Lepe had 15 points and seven steals.

Annie Bafford led the Storm with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Bree Peters chipped in 18 points and eight rebounds.

College men’s basketball

UMPQUA 76, BLUE MOUNTAIN 67 — The Riverhawks need every point of their 41-32 lead at the half to beat the Timberwolves at the NWAC Crossover in Port Angeles, Washington.

Each team scored 35 points in the second, but BMCC could not catch Umpqua. The Timberwolves pulled within 49-44 with 15:30 remaining in the game, but that would be as close as they would get.

Jaquone Gatling led BMCC with 18 points and five rebounds, while Conrad Dudley added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Creighton Hansen and Will Harris each had 18 points for the Riverhawks.
