HERMISTON — In a season where Hermiston had a down year, junior JR Starr stood out for the Bulldogs, being named to the Mid-Columbia Conference second team as a utility player.

Starr, who played shortstop and pitched for the Bulldogs, hit .393 with 22 hits, including five doubles, three triples and one home run. He also had 12 RBIs, scored 13 runs and had 12 stolen bases.

On the mound, he threw 31⅓ innings with a 7.819 ERA. He struck out 32 and walked 21.

Also for Hermiston, junior Tyler West was named to the honorable mention team as a first baseman.

West hit .327 with 16 hits, 12 RBIs and six runs scored. Defensively, he had nine errors in 71 total chances.

Kennewick’s Simeon Howard was named player of the year, while Kamiakin’s Landon Welter was selected pitcher of the year. Kennewick’s Lenny Ayers was named coach of the year.

MCC softballThe Mid-Columbia Conference team is sprinkled with a large number of underclassmen this spring, and Hermiston freshman Mika Cherry is among those players, being named to the second team as a designated hitter.

Cherry hit .386 for the Bulldogs with 17 hits, including seven doubles, one RBIs and seven runs scored. She also had four stolen bases.

Hermiston sophomore Karsyn Botefuhr was named to the honorable mention team as a second baseman.

Botefuhr hit .316 with 18 hits. She had six doubles, 10 RBIs and scored 17 runs. Defensively, she had just five errors in 68 total chances, and helped turn two double plays.

Southridge sophomore Jadyn Holdren was named player of the year, while Richland’s Casey Emery was named coach of the year.
