Landslide closes Highway 30 east of Astoria

U.S. Highway 30 was closed about halfway between Astoria and Clatskanie due to a landslide on Tuesday night.

The closure was expected to extend through Thursday and possibly longer while crews cleared debris off the road, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

As heavy rain hit the North Coast, at least 10 truckloads of rock and mud slid onto the highway near milepost 74 at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Department of Transportation said. As of Wednesday morning, material was still sliding down the hillside.

That section of highway has long experienced landslides, the state said.

Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes, but the state advises against using off-highway routes on GPS services.
