Sept. 11, 1921

Lester Hurst, who lives six miles southeast of Pendleton, lost his barn and about 170 tons of hay yesterday as the result of a fire, supposed to be started by a smoker’s match. The fire started just after the noon hour. The damage is estimated at $2000, most of which was covered by insurance.

Melon harvest has peaked in the West End of Umatilla County. Quality of this year’s crop again is good. Many area youths find part time jobs in the melon harvest, and some schools delayed their opening to allow the youths to work.

Nearly 50 homemakers, mothers, and professional women spent Saturday in the woods near La Grande, honing their skills in hunting, fishing, and general survival tactics. These women aim to be equal partners in the woods with — or without — their hunting hubbies.
