Girls prep roundup | Bucks charge through North Eugene for nonleague victory

THE DALLES — Pendleton never allowed more than seven points in any of the first three quarters, staying in charge for the entire game as the Bucks recorded a 43-28 nonleague victory Friday over North Eugene in The Dalles.
The Bucks broke the game open early with 19 points in the first eight minutes. Chloe Taber and Carissa Cooley each hit 3-pointers as Pendleton took control right away.
“We put a lot of pressure on their ball handlers,” Pendleton coach Kevin Porter said. “We capitalized on some early turnovers. We kind of went stagnant in the middle for a while, but brought it back in the fourth quarter.”
North Eugene’s defense stiffened in the second quarter, allowing Pendleton just three points, but the Bucks still held a 22-12 lead at the half.
North Eugene managed just five points in the first quarter, seven in the second, and six in the third. They finally broke into double digits with 10 points in the final eight minutes.
Taber and Natalie Neveau each had a team-high nine points to lead Pendleton. Muriel Hoisington had eight, and Daisy Jenness seven. Neveau also grabbed nine rebounds, and Jenness had six.
North Eugene’s Reice Newell had a game-high 10 points.
The Bucks (2-3) host Lewiston on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
NIXYAAWII 53, RIVERSIDE 33 — Freshman Sophie Bronson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Golden Eagles (2-3) to a nonleague win over the Pirates at the Columbia River Clash in Umatilla.
Bronson scored all of her points on seven 3-pointers.
“I thought the team played better defensively without fouling,” Nixyaawii coach Jeremy Madden said. “We took care of the ball in the second half, kept turnovers down and moved the ball better to get easier baskets. I like how my young team is progressing.”
Bianca Avalos led Riverside (1-4) with 10 points, while Cesi Garcia added nine.
ELGIN 58, PILOT ROCK 22 — The Huskies remain undefeated (4-0) following their win over the host Rockets (2-2).
Rockets sophomore Emily Lambert recorded a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
The Rockets are on the road Saturday to face Cove at 4 p.m.
JORDAN VALLEY 41, ECHO 26 — The Cougars (1-3) suffered their second straight defeat at the Badger Tournament at Powder Valley High School.
Sophomore guard Faith McCarty scored 15 points to lead the Cougars.
Echo will have an opportunity to take home a Badger Tournament win at 10 a.m. Saturday in the final round against the winless Imbler Panthers.
GRANT UNION 38, UMATILLA 37 — The Vikings fell by just one point in a heartbreaking overtime battle against the Prospectors in the second round of the Columbia River Clash Tournament at Umatilla High School.
The game was knotted at 31-31 at the end of regulation. The Prospectors then outscored the Vikings 7-6 in overtime to pull out a close victory.
Umatilla’s Taylor Durfey scored a team-high 18 points and Devina Monreal had 12, including two 3-pointers.
FAITH BIBLE 62, IRRIGON 36 — The Knights fell in the second round of the winner’s bracket during Friday’s nonleague matchup at the Columbia River Clash Tournament at Umatilla High School.
JaLay Burns had 17 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, and Princesa Chavez added 10 points and four rebounds. Alyssa Luna followed with eight points and eight rebounds.
“They were a very athletic team,” Irrigon head coach Mike Royer said of Faith Bible. “We were two steps behind all night.”
Irrigon (2-3) will vie for third place against Mac-Hi at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
PORTLAND CHRISTIAN 34, HEPPNER 29 — The Mustangs suffered their first loss in a close nonleague road matchup.
Heppner (2-1) trailed by just one point at halftime, and tied the game at 20-20 in the third quarter. Portland Christian’s 14-9 run in the fourth put the game out of reach.
Sydney Wilson led the Mustangs with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Heppner travels to Dufur at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for another nonleague contest.
IONE/ARLINGTON 52, DAYVILLE-MONUMENT 18 — The Cardinals (2-1) had a strong overall performance in a blowout win over the Tigers (1-1) at the Snowball Tournament at Arlington High School.
Jessica Medina led the Cardinals with 13 points, while Mackenzie Heideman had eight points, five steals and three assists. Hailey Heideman added eight rebounds, and Faviola Juarez five steals.
Ione/Arlington will play Klickitat/Glenwood (Washington) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Arlington.
HELIX 37, CONDON/WHEELER 35 — Kaylee Cope scored 11 points as the Grizzlies edged past Condon/Wheeler at the Arlington Snowball Tournament on Friday.
Helix (2-1) will face Klickitat/Glenwood for the first of two meetings this season at 1 p.m. Saturday for the tournament’s final round.
Wrestling
Hermiston dominated the middle and upper weights, but Chiawana did all the damage it needed to in the first seven matches en route to a 42-36 Mid-Columbia Conference win Thursday in Hermiston.
The Bulldogs forfeited at 130 pounds, making the difference in the match.
Every match of the night was won by fall.
Talia Borrego started the Bulldogs’ run of six consecutive wins with a pin of Angelica Sanchez at 135, and Jazmin Deike finished things off with a pin of Lizeth Jauregui at 190.
