Burl Irvin Green passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on the evening of October 24, 2018.
Burl was born to Orval and Jessie (Frum) Green on July 25, 1932, in La Grande, Ore. As one of 13 children, he spent his childhood and teenage years enjoying all that the verdant Grande Ronde Valley had to offer. Whether hunting, camping, fishing or hiking, he rarely missed an opportunity to head outdoors.
In October of 1951, Burl married his childhood sweetheart, Loes Mae Ann (Guimond) Green, and together they raised 10 children. They started out married life in La Grande, moved to Cottage Grove and eventually settled in for the long haul in Pendleton. Loes was the love of Burl’s life. Though she passed away in June of 1988 he never remarried. She was truly his one-and-only.
Burl was an excellent student and a standout, multi-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track and field.
After graduating high school, Burl attended Eastern Oregon College of Education, graduating in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He would subsequently acquire his master’s degree from the University of Oregon in 1963. An Oregon Ducks fan, he attended countless games and rarely missed a chance to catch one on TV.
Burl spent the majority of his teaching career in the Pendleton School District, focusing primarily on the subjects of math and social studies. He also spent decades coaching junior high football, basketball and track and field. He was respected and loved by students and staff alike.
In 1990 Burl retired from teaching but continued to substitute in the Pendleton School District for several more years. In 1995 he moved to Canby, Ore., where he would live out the rest of his retirement years traveling the globe. His travels took him to places such as Australia, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand and many destinations across the United States.
Burl loved his children and they reciprocated that love. He enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by family.
Burl was preceded in death by his parents, all 12 of his siblings, a daughter Teresa Renee who died in infancy, and Loes, his wife of 36 years.
He is survived by all ten of his children: Julie, Gary (Eric), Becky, Mark, Kelly, Steven, Angela, Kathy, Craig and Joy. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Burl will be announced at a later date and will be held in Pendleton, Ore.
