After years of selling smoking accessories, Thur’s Smoke Shop is looking to get into the legal marijuana game.
At a meeting Feb. 16, the Pendleton Planning Commission will consider granting conditional approval for a recreational marijuana store application from Bryson Thurman, the owner of Thur’s.

Thur’s current location at 34 S.E. Emigrant Ave. is not allowed to sell marijuana under the city’s zoning laws. The new location will be at 1292 S.W. Tutuilla Road.
Thur’s follows Kind Leaf Pendleton, Pendleton Cannabis and a marijuana retailer at 2003 S.W. Emigrant Ave. as businesses who have initiated the licensing process.
While some of those retailers faced no public opposition during the zoning process, Thur’s won’t be as fortunate.
Three letters have already been submitted to the commission from nearby property owners who are opposed to its location.
“We have firsthand experience with one marijuana store that opened up in our neighborhood in Long Beach, California,” Melody and George Nielsen wrote in one such letter. “It increased a bad element in the neighborhood with people walking through and leaving their empty containers on the sidewalks. We saw an increase of crime and break-ins into the homes for items they could sell quickly for drug money … we do not want to see a repeat of this in this area of Pendleton.”
All four will need licenses from the city and state before they can open for operation.
