A 70th wedding anniversary is planned Sept. 22, 2016, for Harry and Loretta Kuhlmann, who were married in Las Vegas in 1946. The couple met on a blind date when Harry’s Navy ship was in Portland, Ore., for repairs. He served in the Navy for four years and was involved in the first underwater atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific.
Harry worked in and then purchased a linoleum and carpet shop; he was part owner of Pendleton Floor Covering before retirement. Loretta retired from her job as secretary at Blue Mountain Community College, where she worked for 23 years.
They are active in the Free Methodist Church, and Harry with the VFW. Their hobbies include woodworking, stained glass, photography, hunting and spending time with family. Until recently they spent their winters in Arizona.
The Kuhlmanns have one daughter, Brenda, and four grandchildren: Thad Baum, the late Tane Travis Baum (killed in Afghanistan when enemy fire shot down his helicopter), Monty Davis and Elisabeth Davis. They also have seven great-grandchildren.
