PENDLETON — More than $83,000 has already been won as the 2016 Pendleton Round-Up prepares for its first performance of the week today.
Team roping, tie-down roping and steer wrestling completed their first go during Tuesday’s slack while steer ropers began their second round of competition in earnest.

Five seconds was a key figure for team ropers and steer wrestlers as that was the winning time in both events.
Team ropers Aaron Macy and Evan Arnold pulled it off in their event to win a round in Pendleton for the first time.
At 33rd and 25th in the PRCA standings, respectively, Macy and Arnold would practically need a sweep in Pendleton to get into the running for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but the bubble team of Jake Cooper and Tyler McKnight helped their cause with a seventh-place finish in 6.3. They came into the week in 21st and placed seventh in the round.

TIE-DOWN ROPING
Trending
Texas cowboy Shank Edwards is no stranger to success in the Pacific Northwest after winning the all-around tie-down titles at the 2010 Farm-City Pro Rodeo in Hermiston, and will be looking to add a Round-Up title as well now that he’s sitting atop the leaderboard through one round.
Edwards, who entered the week No. 32 in the PRCA standings, tied his calf in 8.4 seconds to earn a check for $4,111.48.
Shank’s winnings won’t get him into the WNFR race on their own, but world No. 16 Blane Cox got a check that will at least keep him in the discussion until the final weeks by placing second with a time of 8.6 for a $3,575.20 payday.

STEER WRESTLING
Montana cowboy Newt Novich upstaged some of the best bulldoggers in the world by winning the first go in their event with a 5-flat on Tuesday.
Novich, ranked No. 4 in the Montana Circuit and outside the PRCA’s top 50, his run was half a second better than two competitors who will finish their season at the WNFR in December.
J.D. Struxness (No. 5) and Dakota Eldridge (No. 8) finished in a three-way tie for second with the unranked Riley Krassin at 5.5.
Mount Vernon’s Trevor Knowles came into the week 15th after getting a late start on the season, and placed eighth in 5.9 seconds as he tries to make his 13th WNFR.

STEER ROPING
If Texas cowboy Jason Evans wasn’t a lock to make his fifth National Finals Steer Roping coming into the week, he is now.
Evans didn’t win any money on Tuesday, but his 11.5-second time was the fastest of the week and will guarantee the No. 4 steer roper in the world a check of some sort at the Round-Up.
Statesman Guy Allen also took a big step toward his 33rd NFSR with a time of 13.4 that puts him third entering today’s action.
At No. 15 on the PRCA money list, Allen needs a big week to get off the bubble and pocketed a little more than $300 on Monday by placing eighth in the first go.
